A very worthwhile read

For anyone who is interested in a thorough and detailed exploration of the societal stigma of mental illness, this is worth your time. It is very academic in nature, so I would not recommend it to casual readers, but if you have a passion for mental illness it is not that tough of a read. This has inspired me to think more about what we can do in our society to improve the lives of those afflicted by mental illness, and those merely affected by it (which is truly all of us, whether we realize it or not).

Stigma

This book was filled with information and history or stigma in mental illness. It was so compelling it read like fiction. I didn't want to put it down. At the same time the book was academic. I will look by more work from Corrigan. I already I have looked at more recent articles by him.

an excellent beginner's book with beautiful illustrations

This is a very visually-appealing book with creative photography and excellent color pictures on almost every page. It is targeted to the beginner, and (though a beginner myself) I think it is quite informative and gets one off to a good start. It has an index of many common trees used for bonsai and rates them according to difficulty, hardiness and sun/shade preference. It's weakness is an abundance of technical printing errors (goofed up captions, mostly), but in spite of this I heartily recommend it to the beginner for use as "A [Basic] Care Manual" and say it's well worth its price.

Very good book with excellent photographs. Good advices for those who want to buy, create or simply take good care of bonsai trees. The author explains very well how to do almost everything with these wonderful trees. If you're intention is to buy only one book of bonsai you should buy this one. It's my favourite!

Helped my bonsai live!

Anyone just starting out with their first bonsai will benefit from this book. It helped me to learn not only about not only the history of the bonsai but how to really care for my little tree. My bonsai seems to be better looking and healthier than before I had this book. I would recommend this book to anyone considering buying a bonsai, this book helps you to know how and what type of bonsai to buy too.

If You Could Only Read ONE Book On Investments, This Is It

Eleven years ago, I retired from a successful, 30 year career in financial services, the last 20 as a Financial Consultant for two major Wall Street firms. Now, I manage my own portfolio in retirement. This is the best book on investments that I have ever read and I have read many of them. There is really too much to comment on for a concise review, since there is so much wisdom and knowledge packed in "Random Walk's" 447 pages. All I can say is that it is written in a very engaging style and it has so many take-aways that any individual investor can use to great advantage in their own investing and financial planning.

I do have one major area of disagreement. In my experience, most investors need the advice and counsel of an investment professional. We all need someone to check our egos, challenge our assumptions, and to be a voice of reason that fights the emotions of fear and greed that can consume us at market tops and market bottoms and cause us to make bad decisions. Maybe it is a fee only adviser, maybe it is a low fee money manager that uses an index fund, MPT, random walk approach. I understand that several of the discounters are testing such services.

So, read this book, then take notes and apply its lessons to your portfolio. If you don't understand parts of it, then educate yourself.

Great book, but not much changed from previous edition. If you have the 10th edition, save your money.

Great book, as always, but you can't really call this a revised edition when the only thing changed is an additional selection about "smart-beta". If you have the 2012 tenth edition, save your money and research "smart-beta" on the internet.

Thank God for Active Traders

I have no beef against the active traders. Maybe I have a little pity for them, since half of them have to lose money if the market’s a zero-sum game. That’s more than half, once you start to factor in fees.

I have long ago realized that though I am interested in the workings of the market, I am not going to delve to the minutiae of companies and different trades and try to be smarter than someone else on the other side who thinks he’s doing the same thing. Nope. Malkiel and Bogle figured out a way I could get away with making the most return possible with the least effort possible - indexing.

Basically this book is a defense of the efficient market hypotheses, or at least part of it. As I understand it, there are two parts to the EMF. One is that the price is always right. So that there’s no such thing as a bubble ever because all the valuations of the market price of securities are representative of their underlying value. The other part is that there’s no free lunch. Or basically arbitrage opportunities may exist, but they are not predictable nor do they persist. I think that the second part is more true than the first, and that’s what this book really digs into, showing you that there are no persistent ways to beat the market. If that’s true, then the best way to consistently make money is to just buy the market. Thankfully there are financial instruments that make that possible - and they’re where I have my money. Cards on the table, this book is just a giant exercise in confirmation bias for me, but it is confirmation bias well done in clear writing with a well-organized structure. I read this burning through the pages on a long holiday weekend, and I wanted to send it to my parents. I thought again about that. It might be too late for them since I don’t know their financial positions. Maybe I’ll send it to my siblings.

A final note, though. Even though Malkiel shows convincingly that there is no way to beat the the market, there is an odd paradox. For the market to work, it needs people out there who think that they can beat the market. Even if the best strategy is to buy and hold a low cost index fund, if everyone did that liquidity and price discovery would drop. What someone following Malkiel needs is people who think he is wrong and that they can generate “alpha” (returns above the market). This goes against the second part of the EMF, where arbitrage opportunities can’t exist because if you have a way to beat the market, then everyone has a way to beat the market and then once everyone is in, no one has a way to beat the market.

The book uses the chemistry of the f elements as a vehicle for the communication of several important chemical concepts that are not usually discussed in detail in undergraduate courses, for example the chemical consequences of relativity and the lanthanide and actinide contractions. Many important modern applications of f element chemistry, e.g. the use of actinides in nuclear power generation and of the lanthanides in magnetic resonance imaging and catalytic converters in motor vehicle exhausts, are also discussed in depth.

An excellent introduction to f-element chemistry

Scott and Kaltsoyannis have done a really fine job of preparing an entry-level textbook which deals with the chemistry of the lanthanide and actinide elements. It is written at a level suitable for advanced undergraduate and upward, and the authors are to be commended for their clear and concise explanations of some difficult concepts. This is a highly readable text that should be recommended to anyone wishing to obtain an overall picture of the physical and chemical trends within this often-neglected group of elements.

Written in the best of the modern tradition

Too many treatments of the lanthanides ends up with lists of data or a main focus on spin mulitiplisities and terms. I'm not sure how many there are that understands the last topic, and can apply it to anything. This book take a broader and more coherent view of the chemistry of the f-group. Many parts are eminent. And the only I could wish more of would a be some few extra sentences about the molecule orbitals in the actinide complexes, ...just to make it even smoother to read.

This was a text used in class, and while the teacher did mostly lecturing without the text, it was a great resource-easy to understand, and highly applicable. THe text does a great job of really explaining the material in a clear and concise manner.

pleasantly surprised

I bought this for an International Marketing course which actually required the 6th edition. Instead of paying $90+ for the newer version, I paid about ten dollars. The page numbers are different from the new version but the content is almost exactly the same. Most of the case studies in this book are the same as in the new version, but there are two are three in the 6th edition that aren't in this edition. I haven't had any troubles using this edition in place of the newer one. The book arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Glad I saved a ton of money without sacrificing quality or content.

one of the best marketing books ever. Information are super interesting and stright forward. i WOULD RECOMMENT IT TO ANY STUDENT OR PROFESSOR who is a international business major, or emphasis.
