The "Zen" of Advanced Digital Signal Processing!

Several years ago, my company hired Fred Harris as a consultant to help create an extremely complex multi-channel digital receiver. As it turned out, we could not have found a better candidate. Fred doesn't just offer state-of-the-art processing techniques - many of which he himself has developed - his pragmatic focus on efficiency and real-world implementation is truly refreshing.

This superb book delivers that same approach and philosophy in a very readable, approachable text. Unlike the vast majority of books in the field, which teach only the mathematics of signal processing, Fred teaches you what it really means, and how to make it work. You'll learn extremely efficient signal processing techniques, but even more importantly, you'll gain a much deeper understanding of digital communications that will change the way you approach systems design. From my perspective, this is quite simply the best book available for practitioners who are creating advanced digital communications systems.

The most valuable text ever for Multirate filters and DSP

With excellent clarity, multirate filters are described, derived and then implemented. Any DSP filter designer will benefit from this book, advanced or not. Also, a series of proprietary filter structures have been 'donated' to the DSP community in this book, wherein some of the most effecient filter structures I've ever seen are explained and implemented.

Maybe I am the only one who didn't get much out of this book

I was hoping to get a good understanding of multirate DSP out of this text, having no knowledge of it previously. However, I was not succesful. The text starts out well with a practical illuminating example of the use of multirate signal processing. However, I was not able to absorb much knowledge in the subsequent chapters and gave up on continuing. There are very few equations in this book, which to me was initially promising as I am tired of DSP math books. The author relies more on graphics and figures to explain his point, but I found that the detail was lacking. Perhaps someone with stronger background in this area would be better served by this text.

Good flashcards, but not complete

I bought these to supplement my "Cracking the GRE" book because it was taking me waaaay too long to write out all of the flashcards for the "hit parade" words in the book. I assumed that since the words in the book are supposedly the most important to learn that they would be included in the flashcards, especially since it is the same publisher. Unfortunately that was not the case and I ended up using 48 out of 50 of the extra cards included in the set to make my own flashcards to make up the difference of the missing "hit parade" words (and this doesn't include the "beyond the hit parade" ones, I haven't even made it that far). So it has saved me some time, but it seems a bit silly to me that these wouldn't be complete.

Also, on the "cracking" DVD, they show you how to set up flashcards to make them the most useful. They say to create a sentence with a clue and to put that clue on the front of the card to help you remember. They also said to include the pronunciation of the word. These flashcards have synonyms, and a sentence along with the definition on the back, but not the other two tips that the folks at Princeton review had said to use when making your own flashcards... again a discrepancy.

Overall, I do think these flashcards are helpful, I just think that Princeton Review should be more consistent across studying materials to make all of our lives easier. Mastering even a small percentage of all the possible GRE words is an arduous task, so anything that makes it even a little bit easier is worth it, I say.

It improved my score

I recommend this product to anyone preparing to take the GRE. I took the ETS practice test as a baseline before studying and received a score of 152 (490 scaled/56th percentile). When I reviewed the questions that I missed, the problem was that I couldn't understand the question because it all hinged on a word I was unfamiliar with. This is why I decided to buy vocab flash cards.

I purchased this one in addition to the Barron's cards. There are only about 20 vocab words from Barron's that aren't in the Princeton Review cards. This product has far more words; however, it doesn't help with the quantitative section like Barron's does. I didn't see this as a problem, though, since I already have a grasp of those concepts.

As a procrastinator, I waited until five days before my test to begin studying the vocab, which I wouldn't recommend.
How I studied:
1. I went through all 500 and pulled out the ones I already explicitly knew (~100 words)
2. I divided them by letters and designated 8/9 letters per day for the first three days.
3. I read the word, the definition, synonyms, the sentence, and the word again for one letter of the alphabet at a time. If I could think of a hint for remembering the word, I wrote that on the back.
4. I went though that letter and pulled out the ones I remembered and went through the process of reading the card again and again until I remembered all the words for that specific letter.
5. On the fourth day, I went through all 500 again and studied the ones that I had forgotten.
6. On the fifth day, I took the test.

I took my GRE and received a score of 161 (620 scaled/89th percentile). The questions are far easier to answer when you understand what it's asking. I did see about 20 of the words on the test but that is to be expected. Not all of them will appear, but you will be glad to know the ones that do. I was also able to integrate many of them into the writing section.

The only problem I had with these cards was that some words were so obscure that I had to look up pronunciations. It would be nice if this were included on the front of the card just to save time.

I suggest that anyone preparing for the GRE with this product should begin studying months in advance instead of cramming like I did. I took four days of studying for hours when I could have done twenty minutes here or there over months.

These flashcards are amazing!

When I was looking to buy a set of flashcards, I was very torn between getting the Kaplan version and this version. I have to say that I am absolutely in love with these flashcards! They're visually appealing, while still being basic, provide great definitions as well as sentences and synonyms. It even comes with 50 additional cards to make your own.. genious. I've only had them for 2 days, and I've already learned 50 new words! This has to be the single best GRE-study-aid that I have purchased so far.

No topic could be more demanding or fraught with subjectivity--not to mention mysticism--but Crick insists upon the value of rational thought, logic, and experimental verification. This perspective underlies the "Astonishing Hypothesis," which states "that `You,' your joys and your sorrows, your memories and your ambitions, your sense of personal identity and free will, are in fact no more than the behavior of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules." How's that for reductionism? But think about it. Could anything actually be more astonishing than learning that neurons make, store, and retrieve memories? Create moods? Or, and this is Crick's focus, interpret light as images? Flawed, but still worth it

The astonishing hypothesis referred to in the title of Crick's book is that all of your phenomenological experience is ultimately reducible to "no more than the behavior of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules." So, just how is consciousness neurally instantiated? What the reader should take away from the book is just how difficult of a question this is.

Francis Crick was a thorough going empiricist and he strongly believed that the experimental method was the only way of successfully tackling the problem of consciousness. Along with his close collaborator, Christof Koch, Crick chose visual awareness (rather than say, self-awareness) as the main point of attack. The reason for this is because the visual system is relatively well understood and much easier to study in the laboratory.

Visual processing is an extremely complex business. Essentially, the visual system has to create a fairly high-fidelity representation of the environment (a model) from an array of heterogeneous light patches falling onto the retina. A staggering number of computational processes need to be performed in order for you to become aware of the final output. These processes operate unconsciously, in massively parallel streams. So, what we finally become aware of (our model) is the end result of a great many hidden computations. Much has been learned about the details in which the various features of a visual scene are decomposed and processed, but what remains a mystery is how we ultimately see something (i.e., become visually aware of it). As Crick says, what is required is an account of our "explicit, multilevel, symbolic interpretation of a visual scene."

"The Astonishing Hypothesis" does not provide anything like a Crick-Koch `theory' of consciousness. In fact, Crick goes to some length to eschew any precise definitions or theories. Any such purported theories, he believed, were pre-mature. (The closest that he comes to presenting some kind of a theory is his `Processing Postulate'). Instead what the book offers is a general strategy for submitting the problem to experimental study. Here the idea is to look for neural signatures of awareness or more technically the neural correlates of consciousness (abbreviated NCCs). In a nutshell (excuse the oversimplification), here is what NCCs are all about: submit to study some visual phenomenon which has an ambiguous interpretation (e.g., the Necker cube which can be perceived in two possible ways) and simultaneously obtain measures of neural activity. Some portion of the neural activity associated with the processing of an ambiguous figure will remain invariant (that portion which corresponds to the unchanging retinal input) while another, minimal portion of the neural activity will vary along with the percept. This variant, minimal portion is a good bet for representing a NCC, a neural signature of awareness. Finding a NCC can also tell us many other interesting things, such as whether or not there any special properties of the neurons in question, whether they are located in particular places or cortical layers and so on. And, a similar mechanism which underlies visual awareness is likely to underlie other forms of awareness. [Note that this addresses what David Chalmers has called the `easy' problem of consciousness and does not touch on the `hard' problem. There is a possibility however that Chalmers' hard problem is ill-posed and that there may in fact not be a hard problem to address].

Crick presents the results of many interesting research studies that bear on the problem of consciousness. He devotes some space to the issue of temporal binding and the 40-Hz oscillation hypothesis (or more precisely, the gamma-band oscillation hypothesis) as well as the potential importance of reverberatory thalamo-cortical circuits (see also the work of Gerald Edelman). Crick also speculates about the possibly important role played by the claustrum in the generation of consciousness (something he thought about a lot just prior to his death). Unfortunately for the general reader, this comes only near the end of the book, after a rather protracted discussion of the psychology and neurobiology of vision. For a reader who is unfamiliar with neuroscience, all the hard work done to get to the final portion of the book may produce a low pay-off. It seems that Crick could have got the main point of the book across just as strongly while omitting some of the technical details along the way. For those who have some familiarity with the subject matter the book will actually be an interesting and concise review but since the work was intended for a general readership one must judge it according to that criterion (and this is one of the book's flaws).

Francis Crick died in 2004. This marked a tremendous loss to the field as Crick was blessed with a brilliant mind and he undoubtedly had it in him to make many more important contributions. He brought his enthusiasm to the study of consciousness and made it a bona-fide scientific problem. For this, among other things, he should be celebrated.

A few final remarks about the book's title are in order. First, "The Scientific Search for the Soul" is a sensationalist title that was more likely than not the publisher's idea. Second: as most of the people working in the neurosciences adopt a materialist perspective (the most famous exception of course was Sir John Eccles), the purported astonishing aspect of the hypothesis has sometimes been questioned. And yet, this idea (that our consciousness, in all its richness, is in some mysterious way the result of biophysical processes) really should be astonishing. It is easy to be familiar with the workings of the brain and still slip into old habits of thought, implicitly believing that there really is some homunculus in the head who is doing all of the perceiving. As Crick says, "A man may, in religious terms, be an unbeliever but psychologically he may continue to think of himself in much the same way as a believer does, at least for everyday matters."

It is interesting to speculate about whether our experience of ourselves would change even in the hypothetical case that we did have a complete neurobiological theory of consciousness.

The Not So Astonishing Hypothesis

I purchased "The Astonishing Hypothesis" by Francis Crick with great expectations. I am very much interested in the scientific search for what some call "soul" and was under the impression that Crick (co-discoverer of the double helix DNA structure) had marshalled plausible or powerful evidence that the soul merely is a person's mental activities that result from the behavior of nerve cells, glial cells, atoms, molecules and ions that influence glial or nerve cells. For the most part, mutatis mutandis, I affirm Crick's hypothesis. However, I don't think "The Astonishing Hypothesis" comes anywhere close to providing information that supports Crick's hypothesis. His detour on how the human brain sees is at times interesting, but ultimately not all that helpful in illuminating Crick's "astonishing hypothesis." The book (page 259) supplies a reasonable answer to presupposed objections via-a-vis Crick's modus operandi for supporting his hypothesis. The scientist explains why he chose the visual system to buttress his hypothesis. It evidently yields most easily to "experimental attack" and is only the start (i.e. a prolegomenon) of explaining what soul is. The work's provisional nature is to be applauded. However, since the attack on "soul" has just started, it seems that Crick should have been more modest in his claims and not proclaimed the death of the human soul (as the term is commonly understood) until a full "experimental attack" of the brain had been carried out. Personally, I believe that theoreticians who have undertaken studies in the philosophy of mind offer more reasonable alternatives or explanations for "soul" than Crick does. The concept of supervenience more adequately accounts for "mind" or "soul" than "The Astonishing Hypothesis" does. While "mindness" is probably a higher-level phenomenon based on a lower-level phenomenon, as are qualia, it is my belief that mind is not reducible to brain states. But without the brain, mind does not exist: mind supervenes on the brain. William Hasker's "The Emerging Self" satisfactorily develops these points.

Not a light read

Francis Crick is probably best known to most of us from high school biology classes for his pioneer work with James Watson on the structure and function of DNA. In his book the Astonishing Hypothesis he tackles a topic hardly less complex, the origin of awareness. Although the subtitle would suggest that the discussion is the scientific proof for the existence of the soul--and possibly thereby the existence of God--the reader who takes up the book with this expectation will be resoundingly disappointed. Instead he or she will find a very convoluted discussion of brain neurophysiology, the theoretical basis of sensory systems, the attempts to synthesize human neural function in computers, and the author's personal theory of free will. What if anything any of this has to do with the soul is anybody's guess.
On the whole, I have no quarrel with the author's choice of subject matter, but I found the book at times overly in depth and at others too brief in its discourse. I also found that the train of thought was a little confusing, as though the author went off on interesting tangents at great lengths and could only with great effort get back on track. It was as though he could have used a better outline to begin with or had attempted to cover too much in too small a space. It might also have arisen from his need to extensively paraphrase the work of others in fields in which he himself has less expertise. The discussion of the neural function of the human brain, particularly the oddities of its dysfunction were quite good. Indeed I felt it was an excellent update on what I had learned years ago in A&P for nursing school. The discussion of neural networks and artificial intelligence got a little too detailed for me, but if you're the type who finds Roger Penrose a pleasant afternoon's read, then Crick's account might actually be a little too light minded for you.
In general I found the writer's style was labored enough for it to require a concerted effort to plow my way through it. It took several attempts, during which I read several other books on wholly different topics, before I could actually finish it. I even went to the extreme of taking it with me to my health club where I would be a "captive audience" with nothing better to take my mind off the boredom of my half hour on the tread mill. On the whole, I preferred boredom. While I've no doubt the gentleman is a very learned individual, I've undertaken more readable books on the subject of mind and awareness. States of Mind by Conlon and Hobson would probably be more understandable by and enjoyable to the average reader, although this book too tends to try to cover too much in too little space.

Great Parody!

If you don't like parodies then I wouldn't suggest you buying this book. If you believe Jane Austen is the pinnacle of great classical literature then please do not buy this book!

But if you enjoy seeing a classic novel changed and reconstructed to the point where the undead are brought into a particular time in England then you will enjoy this novella. It is a quick and belly-achingly hilarious read. I found myself laughing out loud at times (much to the chagrin of various family members who assumed I'd lost all my marbles and then some).

Ms. Jones has a knack for making terrific parodies and if you enjoyed Romance Novel and Melvin the Dry Cleaning Zombie and Vampire Shoe Warehouse then you will absolutely positively enjoy this book. Kudos, Ms. Jones: this is my favorite parody yet that you've created.

A Clever Parody from a talented writer!

Every now and then, I just want to read a book and laugh. I was never all that crazy about Jane Austen growing up and yes, I have seen more versions of the film/television series, Pride and Prejudice to count. This version, Pride & Prejudice, is actually quite cute.

However, the moment vampires become involved, you can throw that old Austen version out of the window and prepare to laugh yourself silly. Think of the original story and then spin it around one hundred and eighty degrees. The book is short, sweet and just long enough to tickle your funny bone but not too long to the point where you start rolling your eyes.

I look forward to reading other parodies by this author as she has definitely raised my interest in Jane Austen. Imagine what she could do with some of her other literary works. Perhaps a version of Emma (Dover Thrift Editions) being chased by zombies? Or what about Mansfield Park with werewolves? There are countless ways to entertain and breathe new life into these novels and I have a feeling if anyone can do it, Ms. Jones has it in spades and then some.

OMG, this book is a riot. Can't say I've laughed as hard as I am while reading this one. Of course my sense of humor is a little coarse at times. On top of it, the book is well written and edited.

And, for France and Germany, the battle would symbolize the terror of industrialized warfare, "a technocratic Moloch devouring its children," where no advance or retreat was possible, yet national resources poured in ceaselessly, perpetuating slaughter indefinitely.

Excellent analysis

This is not a blow-by-blow description of the events at Verdun with the order of battle on each side and a detailed account of the fighting. There are other books for that, and you can get the details of what happened from the wikipedia article. What we do have here is an in-depth analysis of the meaning of Verdun, considered from several different angles. How did it fit in with Falkenhayn's overall plan for the western front? How did the French generals, especially Joffre and Pétain, react to the German attack? What were the goals of the French and the Germans? What were the conditions under which the soldiers fought and what was the state of their morale? And (perhaps most interesting) how did Verdun come to be such an iconic battle after the war, and to this day, especially for the French? Jankowski discusses these and other questions in detail and gives answers as far as can be known, without engaging in undue speculation. The book isn't perfect: the maps leave much to be desired, and the discussion of the topography is sometimes unclear. But this is an excellent book and one which will appeal both to those with a special interest in WWI and those with an interest in military history in general.

There are a number of ways to analyze a battle, especially if it is the most written about engagement of World War I. There are three current books on the subject, and the approach of each is strikingly different. One is McNab’s VERDUN 1916, BATTLE STORY, smaller and more economically priced than its competition, it is rather direct in giving the reader coverage of the battle and recommended. Then there is the most popular of the new books, Mosier’s THE LOST HISTORY OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BATTLE OF WORLD WAR I: VERDUN. The author has lost sight of his claim the “most important” while going off on tangents and producing a “Gee Wiz” type of book in which he points some interesting items (some incorrect) with which the average history buff may impress his friends. Then there is Jankowski’s VERDUN: The Longest Battle of the Great War. Unlike Mosier, he does not claim the battle lasted from 1914 to 1918, but actually covered the actual battle of 1916. Both Mosier and Jankowski include a long detail bibliography, but it is clear that only the latter actually read all those books and documents. Both have a good writing style, but that does not necessarily make a good history books. Jankowski does not provide the detail of the battle found in McNab’s book (Verdun, a Battle History), but if that is what you want Alstair Horne’s book (The Price of Glory) from the 1960s still provides a decent history.
Jankowski does an excellent job in assimilating all his sources to give the reader who already knows something about the battle a better picture of the various aspects of battle including tactics, leaders, and events. The various chapters attempt to tackle such things as the French and German point of view, how the battle affected the public, moral, medical services, desertion, losses and so on. For those who have read Joffre’s and Petain’s accounts, you may have noticed something is missing. These, and other generals, as the author points out, came from the rear depending on reports, and messages, while sending out their life and death orders without actually knowing or even caring what the soldiers at the front experienced. Their front line inspections amounted to little, although Petain seemed to have a much better understanding of what was happening to his men. Meanwhile, generals like Mangin led suicidal charges from behind a desk including a desperate attempt to retake Fort Douaumont. Other officers would refuse to carry some of the directives and on the German side things were no better. The troops in Feldgrau had also become distraught by being slaughtered by French 75s and machine-guns not destroyed in the massive bombardments. Even the German Crown Prince commanding the German 5th Army questioned the leadership and strategy of his commander, General Falkenhayn. Falkenhayn only tried to explain the battle after the war when he decided to claim it was to “bleed the French white.” Unlike the other two books mentioned, this one provides some interesting evidence of how morale rose and fell on both sides, the contribution of the battle to larger mutinies the following year, and even how both sides tried to turn the results of the battle into a victory. This book is for those who already know a little about the battle of Verdun and have sufficient grey matter to want to know how this battle played out and was not a battle of attrition, but one that defined the war.

One of the best books on the battle

For sheer murder, World War One is very high on the list with the Western Front the worst place to be.
Defensive technology was far superior to what an attacker possessed rendering trench lines almost impregnable.
The continuous line of entrenchments prevented maneuvers and there is no flank. Combatants found themselves forced into frontal assaults that do little more than kill their men. The war destroyed a generation and scared all who lived through it.

Verdun is one of the most horrific battles in history.
The French and Germans murdered each other in a sea of mud for almost a year.
During this time, they established a level of bloodshed that is unusual even for this war. “Verdun” became a code denoting unspeakable privation and death.

This book looks at Verdun in many ways.
First, this is a military history but not a detailed one. The two area maps are sufficient for the book but not for anyone trying to follow the battle closely.
Second, this is a history of how an event can take on a life of its’ own forcing the participants down paths they never intended to walk.
Third, the book is a look at how the battle was remembered by the participates and is remembered by history.
Fourth, this is a remembrance detailing the conditions during the battle. This is some of the best work I’ve read on the war. The author skillfully mixes direct quotes with observations to produce a graphic narrative of serving in the war.

While a serious history, this reads like a novel.
The book is both an introduction to the battle while being able to extend the knowledge of the experience reader.

About the Author
Ralph Fischer ist Inhaber und Cheftrainer der M.A.A.F. Schwenningen und betreibt seit über 35 Jahren verschiedene Kampfsport und Kampfkunstsysteme. Er begann seine Kampfsport/Kampfkunst-Ausbildung im Alter von 10 Jahren mit dem westlichen Ringen. Hier wurde er bereits nach 2 Jahren Training in die zweite Bundesliga vom AB-Aichhalden verpflichtet und unter Vertrag genommen. Unter anderem erlernte er auch 3,5 Jahre lang das Wing Tsun Kung Fu bis in die Oberstufe. Aber auch mit Boxen, Ju.Jutsu, Judo und Karate hat er sich eine Zeit lang beschäftigt, bis er den Weg zum Jeet Kune Do und Inosanto Kali fand. Er ist Diplom Fachsport-Pädagoge besitzt mehrere Instruktor- und Prüferlizenzen für Jeet Kune Do, Inosanto-Kali, Brazilian Ji-Jitsu, Kickboxen und MMA und ist berechtigt selbst Lehrer in Kickboxen und MMA auszubilden. Seit 2013 vertritt er noch die Ämter als Sportdirektor und Bundestrainer für MMA und Grappling. In seiner Wettkampflaufbahn, wo er über 350 Kämpfe im Ringen und Kickboxen bestritt, konnte er mehrere nationale und Internationale Titel erkämpfen. Auch an drei Weltrekorden hat er erfolgreich teilgenommen. Im Jahr 2009 wurde er von einem Internationalen Kampfkunst Magazin zum Instruktor of the Year gewählt und in einem Internationalen Buch mit einer Action Sammelkarte abgelichtet und in die Hall of Fame aufgenommen. 2010 wurde er dann erneut für seine 30 Jährige Arbeit als Wettkämpfer und Trainer mit der Hall of Fame Aufnahme ausgezeichnet. Im Jahr 2013 wurde er von Europas bekanntester Ruhmenshalle für verdiente Kampfsportler, der Munich Hall of Honour als Botschafter der Kampfkünste zum Instructor of the Year gewählt und zusammen mit Cynthia „Lady Dragon" Rothrock ausgezeichnet. Im April 2014 wurde seine überaus erfolgreiche Academy ebenfalls für Ihre Leistungen unter anderem WM, EM, und DM Titel im Amateur und Profibereich von der Munich Hall of Fame geehrt und ausgezeichnet. Von 2008 bis zum Jahr 2011 unterrichtete er noch zusätzlich als Dozent für Selbstverteidigung an der Volkshochschule Villingen-Schwenningen. Great Buy!!

This is my first review after a while of being on Amazon- and for good reason, too!

Cover: The cover is bound in psuedo-leather with a raised insigna of The Elder Scrolls in the center. Very eye-catching and appealing

Art: Wow is all I can say! It is amazing to be able to look at the very art that inspired Skyrim, from being just an idea to a massive open world, where you can do whatever you want, when you want...But I've got to stay on topic here. The art is great, and every page is full of it. I promise you that it doesn't disappoint- from stunning landscapes to the sketches that formed the basis of the game.

Shipping: When buying from online websites, I am always wary about the shipping- since a variety of things can go wrong. But, I recieved the book before the expected delivery, to my pleasant surprise. The book wasn't damaged or scratched in any way, and I am glad to say that this purchase was a wonderful success.

Price: I bought the book brand new for just less than $100. Yes, it isn't cheap, but is something that is worth every penny.

In conclusion, if you are on the fence about buying this for any of the aforementioned reasons, I would urge to go ahead and make the purchase! I am very satisfied that I bought this.

i can't recommend this book

i would have done it differently.there were too many concept paintings that never appear in the games instead of actual finished products.if you wanted to show someone the game you devoted so much time to,they would be none the wiser.i can't recommend this book.it could have been so much better.
