Sometmes Good; Sometimes incomplete

The book suffers from common "how to use a program book" problems. It assumes you know too much or too little. If you never used Pubisher, this is a good start if you are doing one of their templates. If you are more advanced and are searching for solutions, it is difficult to find them. For example, lots of problems occur in editing and rearranging. Although there is a chapter on organization, there is nothing in the index under organization. If you don't know the author's terminolgy you can't solve the problem. If you are using XP, examples in Vista is not a real issue. Needed information is frequently buried in one or the other of their templates. For example, in editing a table of contents box, they refer to changing a table, but there is nothing I found on that. Another problem in Publisher is insertng an article with bullets; this requires reformatting the paragraph in Publisher which is not discussed. If you search through the book, you can find most examples, but not neccesarily easily. It is certainly better than having no reference at all.

Not enough info or detail!

This was a disappointing book, and I have found less than half the info I need in here. For instance, I wanted to move a page in my newsletter and the first step in the instructions read "...turn off Two-Page Spread view", but doesn't instruct me how. So, I need to turn to the back and see if I can locate how to do this in the book. I've been trying to figure out how to change my bulleted margin and cannot locate that anywhere in the book. These are just a few examples of what I could NOT find in this book. So, unless you want very basic instructions, this isn't the book for you. Keep looking!

About the Author
Paul Hegstrom is the founder of Life Skills International, a program designed to teach life skills to individuals with unacceptable behaviors and enhance family relationships through nurturing character and maturity. Paul holds a Bachelor of Science degree in pastoral counseling and a Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy. He is a certified cognitive behavioral therapist with the National Board of Cognitive Behavioral Therapists and has been featured by such national media as USA Today, Focus on the Family, The 700 Club, The Montel Williams Show, and The Coral Ridge Hour. A Must Read and Heed Book!

Implement! Do it! Half of my counseling career dealt with violent, angry men, incarcerated for life because they totally lost it... and now regret it. "If only someone had stopped me before I did her in." This statement said over and over even when some went in for counseling sessions yet departed because they did not want the "counsel." That meant dramatic change and they loved their power position so much their "security blanket" was not about to be given up.
Hegstrom's book skillfully presents these insights with all the "on the scene" drama [routinely seen by deputies] as you cannot help but empathize along with all the hurt, pain, and grief experienced by the two parties tied together in these agonizing episodes. Nonetheless, if the solution is only pondered and never applied, they spin their wheels agonizing forever. Read and heed his counsel!
For those couples who will read, I can give them a copy of this book. It is that helpful.

A Must Read for Anyone Dealing With Angry People, Including Yourself!!

Update: I am no longer with the fiance I mentioned in my review. For almost five years now, I have been very happily married to a wonderful man that treats me extremely well. I am truly blessed!

Original review: While in the bookstore at church earlier this year, my fiance at the time held up the book, Angry Men and the Women Who Love Them, and said, "Look at this." My response was, "I want that book. Please buy it for me!" which he did. I had been seeing a pattern of anger and rage in him, and it scared me.

This book absolutely opened my eyes to the root causes of anger, which is a secondary emotion. I grew up with an angry father and so did my fiance, who was incredibly wounded physically, emotionally, and sexually while growing up. What I found so helpful about this book is the discussion of the brain and what happens physiologically when we are physically, emotionally, mentally, and/or sexually wounded before the age of thirteen. The exciting news: It's fixable!!

A month after reading the book I signed up for a Life Skills class and committed to attending once a week for seven months. (The Life Skills organization was started by Paul Hegstrom when he found that typical anger management classes did not work for him and the rage he was dealing with in his own life.) I discovered that I have sought out angry men to date my whole life and did not realize I was doing it. I am a little more than half way through the class now and I can honestly say it is the hardest and yet the most rewarding thing I have ever done in my life. I am learning about myself, working through the pain of my childhood wounds, and seeing incredible hope for my future. Next to becoming a Christian, reading the book and taking the class are the best things I have ever done.

The book gave me the information I needed, and the class is giving me the support and the tools I need to experience healthy relationships with others and most importantly with myself. I find I have a lot more compassion for angry people, but I am also becoming a lot wiser and more discerning about how I interact with them. I highly recommend the book (a very interesting and easy read) and the Life Skills class.

An excellent book to help couples having anger issues. I was suprised to learn that I was angry (by definition) and that it is controllable (never thought so). It turned me round, made me face myself, in a similar way to an alcoholic.

La primera mitad del libro tiene su gracia y atrapa, pero posteriormente como que la historia no amarra y es poco verosímil. Aparte de esto, la edición para Kindle, que fue la que leí, tiene muchos errores de edición como puntuación en lugares equivocados y párrafos duplicados que entorpecen la lectura. El trabajo de edición haría la lectura cómoda, mas me temo que no podría recomendar el texto.

To Boldly Go Where One Has Gone Before....but for Ladies Only....

When Caroline Myss announced she was going back to her work on Archetypes, I was excited as I thought SACRED CONTRACTS was among her best books, but it needed a bit more practical application. However, my excitement turned to disappointment in the first few pages of ARCHETYPES because she doesn't tread much new ground and makes it amazingly clear that this book is meant for "today's woman." Myss focuses on ten archetypes she sees in contemporary society and how today's woman can work with them to experience her power in full. What's amusing to me is that she doesn't address the 4 major archetypes she says we're all born with: The Child, The Prostitute, The Saboteur, and The Victim. In fact, they receive just a few sentences in the back of the book alongside other archetypes in a glossary that's by no means comprehensive. To me, this is the "lightest" self-help book Myss has written and it's clear that she's going for one core audience: middle aged women who seem disenfranchised with their own lives and don't know what to do even after 25 years of Oprah telling them EXACTLY what to do.

Myss offers little to men directly, often devoting a few paragraphs to the male equivalent of the archetype described; however, I disagree with a few of her assessments. She says the male equivalent of the Fashionista is The Gentlemen, who is more of a "leading man" as opposed to being a "flash in the pan." Really? Seriously? Given most of her male audience is made up of gay men, she ought to know better....true, males are just as much Fashionistas, Divas and Tastemakers as women. But many of them are more than just "flashes in the pan. " The top designers for the female form are men. If you're all about image, today's woman, please remember WHO designed those clothes and that perfume for you: men. Her definition of the Gentleman is also a tad dated. If Myss thinks we need to go back to the age where men should always buy women dinner or stand every time a woman comes to the table, she needs to get out of the house more and stop watching Robert Young or Ricky Ricardo and get a high definition television because those days are long gone and it's just the reality of the world we're in (though Myss would likely say things were better back then...a time when women made significantly less money, had fewer opportunities and most of these gestures of chivalry were there to reinforce the fact that women NEEDED to be taken care of. Something today's woman would object to in many ways). My point is that her assessments are sometimes off base and out of touch with modern times or Myss offers nothing of value. In her chapter on The Caregiver, the male equivalent gets just three sentences where she says "men are as able and willing to care for others as women are." Really? That's news? True, fewer men may earn a living by being caregivers, but, to me, she's discounting priests, doctors, guidance counselors, Big Brothers and a whole assortment of male figures who would have been worth a mention.

She also makes a sweeping generalization regarding women in the art world that also seems dated and even suspect in its accuracy. To boil down women's achievements solely to just a few women--such as Georgia O'Keefe--in the visual arts implies that Myss hasn't paid attention to what's happening in art since the 70's. What about Frida Kahlo, Ash Lethal or even Yoko Ono? What about photographers like Annie Lebowitz? Myss writes there are only a handful of women who have achieved "anything like the prominence of their male counterparts." O'Keefe may be one of the few who are a household name, but if you are engaged in the arts community, a tremendous amount of women have made great strides. While they may not be household names, it doesn't diminish their works. And, by the way, on whose terms is Myss speaking of? Public recognition? Money earned? Awards granted? These are all external validations. Myss cannot have her assessment both ways. Don't tell others real power ultimately comes from within but still say too bad you haven't come a long way, baby.

Myss doesn't even bother to address the film/television or literary world as artists or creatives as well, giving the female gender a huge short shrift as she describes the Artist archetype. Streisand, Streep, Bigelow, Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Mirren, Alice Walker, J.K. Rowling, and the pioneer named Gloria....these are all great examples of creatives who embody the Artist Archetype who have all made significant and indelible contributions to the world. Nowhere does she mention them. If you're going to write a book about Archetypal patterns and those who channel them well, certainly these names stand out. Again, there's a lack of depth and thought here when she explains her concepts.

However, the book does have some minor virtues. The one aspect of the book that almost makes it worth the purchase is the advice she gives and the questions she poses for the reader to reflect on. In that regard, Myss delivers. For a novice who has never delved into this study before, Myss' questions surrounding one's loss of power are excellent for getting today's woman in touch with her inner self. I also appreciate her mention of grace throughout the book as there are good lessons on how to find it on a daily basis.

But by the time I finished the book, I felt that it was just a fair surface read. Knowing the CDs she's produced and her previous work on archetypes, I think Myss would have served the public better by placing the information online and embed an Archetypal Encyclopedia on a website so folks recognize that there are more than 12 archetypes and that we play many patterns as part of our calling versus using some to serve a specific motivation. This book actually coincides with the launch of someone else's website (there's a link to a test you can take) on archetypes; my sense is that Myss' work serves as a commercial for the site, leading the reader to sign up right away for more information and products (the url is on the book's cover).

It will be interesting to see how well the book does because some of the more substantial work on archetypes relates to one's astrological chart and how the planetary forces move through our houses as we evolve. In Sacred Contracts, Myss spends a lot more time explaining how the Archetypes play into our life's purpose and the consequences of missing out on the guidance we receive by not following our true path. She also beautifully walks you through the four common archetypes that play a major role in our lives. I think readers looking for substance are best advised to get THAT book first and then move on to Jung's work on Archetypes or check out Richard Tarnas' Cosmos and Psyche. You walk away from those books truly full and the potential for true wisdom runs high when you work with those texts.

Myss' new work appears to be one for the masses--particularly of the female persuasion with shallow and 120 character approach to learning. If you're a male or someone who prefers depth and want more than the casual throw away observation, Archetypes is the literary equivalent of Stevia. It's okay but you won't get any dense literary calories. This is not a rigorous teaching from which you would leave with a true understanding of the archetypal nature of humanity, much less your own self. For that, you need to go deeper and better.

But hey, if you want to merely dabble at exploring your inner-self and are just fine with meager platitudes, ARCHETYPES is the perfect book for you.

Save yourself time (and money)- go to the website instead

I purchased this book hoping it would delve deeper into the archetypal concepts Myss previously introduced in "Sacred Contracts." I got a lot out of that book. This book, however, does not even sound like the same author. For those of you looking for vintage Caroline Myss you will be very disappointed. You should check out the website and you will see everything discussed in the book. There's not much food for thought:(

I was disappointed by lack of substances in this book. Ms. Myss' previous works showed thoughtfulness towards reader and subject. Archetypes has all the seriousness of the cover of Cosmopolitan. I expected more from Ms. Myss.

Excellent background introduction to the Gulf Arabian area.

Looking for Dilmun is based on the first extensive archaeological investigations conducted along the southwest coast of the Arabian Gulf over a 12 year period from 1953. Its main strength is that it is not just a report on research findings of the expeditions. The book also presents a simple introduction to archaeology mixed with an explanation of the discovery of an unknown civilisation. It is easy to read and written in a style that conveys the character of the expeditions, the trials and troubles as well as the successes and more humorous moments. Now, some thirty years on, the book has also captured an excellent picture of life in the Gulf Arabian region both before and during the oil revenue led development which has taken place over the last 40 years. I would recommend the book to anyone who is living in the Gulf region, intends to visit or live in the region or who wishes to understand more about a part of the world which is often misunderstood through the lens of a television news camera

Discovering Dilmun

Geoffrey Bibby was a British archaeologist working for a Danish museum and was one of the first professional archaeologist to explore the Persian Gulf region post WW2 (1947 on...). This resulted largely from a previous job working for one of the oil companies in the Gulf where he made initial contacts. The book itself was published back in 1970 after he'd been working on digs there almost yearly for the previus 23 years. In this period, he and the largely Danish archaeological team surveyed the Gulf region, starting with Bahrein and gradually extending into Oman, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. In the course of these surveys and digs thet discovered the remains of an early civilization contemporary with Sumer and with trading links to both Sumer and the Harrappa (Indus Valley) city states.

The book itself is a non-technical and enjoyable to read account of the archaeological digs conducted, the gradual evolution of knowledge about Dilmun and some hypothesis about the sites and their historical significance. You won't find the detail that you get in peer journals and publications, the book itself was written over 35 years ago and consequently the information is now somewhat dated, but you do get a fascinating account of the digs and some of the discoveries, particularly of the grave-mounds of Bahrain. Bibby does assume that the reader has some familiarity with the history of Summer and the Harrappa civilization, but he does explain where necessary and he introduces some fascinating titbits and surmises.

It's an easy to read, hard to put down book and it also does a good job of illustrating what it was like doing archaeological digs in the Gulf region prior to the influx of oil wealth - as well as portraying the Gulf Arab culture and way of life. There are very few books published on Dilmun, if it's a subject you are interested in this is a "must read".

A personal account of the dig on Bahrain

Geoffrey Bibby was one of the first explorers of Bahrain and the first modern archaeologist to dig there. He and his partner advanced far beyond the handful of predecessors who had surveyed the island previously and discovered the remains of a Sumerian civilization there. There is still much debate over some Bibby's findings in peer journals but what can be agreed on is that the civilization of Bahrain extends back into remote antiquity.
Rather than giving away more details of the book I will finish by stating that Bibby's account is a non-technical reading of his achaeological dig at the mysterious grave-mounds of Bahrain. The only thing he assumes that the reader knows is a general history of the ancient near east and he takes time to explain the finer details when they are relevant. Overall an easy read, especially if you're interested in ancient near eastern history.

NOT WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT

First off, the title is called "Drawing Bishounen" which basically means how to draw a handsome male. But this book is about 98% how to draw Yaoi. (Not that I have a problem with it, but I wanted to learn how to draw guys).

Second, most of the book is nothing more than photographs of models. (Actual People) It looks more like a magazine than a how to draw book. The photography is intermediate at best in most photos.

And Third, there is very little on actaully drawing males. There is a few pages on hands, feet, and facial expressions...but that is about it. I was very disappointed.

If you're looking for a book on how to draw a male...this is not the book for you. Even if you are looking for how to draw Yaoi...It's still not the book for you, unless you like to look at photographs and try to copy those into a manga style drawing with no guidence what so ever.

Alright, but mostly just pictures

I liked this book well enough, but it's not what i'd thought it would be like.
There's a short introduction part where it shows how to draw the male figure a bit, but then it jumps straight to the pictures and stays that way for the rest of the book. There are two japanese models (fitting, if you consider that's where the term 'bishounen' comes from but a little variety would have been nice) for the whole book and it's just not what you'd think when you look at the cover.
When learning to draw you need more than just a barely-there basics and a bunch of pictures, after all, and considering the cheapest used book of this (right now; when i bought mine it was much cheaper) is at around 45$ I'd definately look at other books that have more instruction and less random posing.

If paired with Drawing Yoai, perhaps a misnamed set (18+)

This book contains a quick tutorial on how to construct the human male figure, with several good tips on how to correctly cartoon one...but it isn't anything you won't pick up in any of the other "How to Draw" books. The diagram of bones and muscles with the ones you are most likely to see articulated on the nude figure is pretty helpful.

Mostly this book contains photo reference for poses.
These can be helpful and there are a wide range of poses and interactions included. The first half of the book contains solo figures (one or two of a figure undressing) and a pair interacting in horse play and some snuggling. The second half contains some more sexually charged poses and kissing available clothed or in underwear only. A few are far more sexually explicit than the name of the book implies, while not being pornographic necessarily you could view it as having been intended for pornographic reference, so I would recommend this for consumers over 18 or for an older teen with parental supervision/permission.

It really isn't a reference on how to create a character, which was disappointing to me when I first bought it, but it does show how to correctly utilize photographic reference without exactly copying it when creating an illustration and would provide someone who wasn't familiar with that a good learning experience. I have used some of the more explicit reference to create illustrations of heterosexual and lesbian couples as well so it is a handy all purpose reference and nice to have around when you experience a bit of art block.

If you want a book on creating dynamic characters and using props to further plot and characterization you should check out the Drawing Yaoi book, it should frankly have it's title swapped with this book ~ How To Draw Manga Volume 42: Drawing Yaoi (How to Draw Manga) (v. 42)
If you are interested in creating a full yaoi centric story, pick up both as a set.

About the Author
Jimmy Sanderson, PhD, earned a BA, MA, and PhD from Arizona State University in communication studies. He is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Clemson University, where he directs the sports communication BA program. Prior to entering the academy he worked in human resource management for 11 years. He maintains an active research agenda focused on the intersection of social media and sport, and he also conducts research related to health and safety issues in sport. He has been cited in media outlets such as USA Today, Chronicle of Higher Education, and ESPN.com. He also regularly speaks to sport association groups about social media, such as the National Federation of State High School Associations and Academic Advisors for Athletics. He and his wife, Kirsten, have two boys, Walker and Connor. As a middle school teacher, this book looks at social media on a simplified level and it can be applied to so many people, not just in sports. This is a must-read for any teacher and students are the middle school, high school, and college levels.
