For Any Single Person Who Wants to Maintain Dignity During a Breakup

So many times during and after a breakup we lose ourselves. We become people we don't mean to become - people we don't want to become. Then we're filled with regret. "Why did I let him treat me that way?", "Was it my fault?", "What if I had done something differently?" We get sucked into the all the questions and idols we've created instead of standing firm in God's truth. In Renee's book, she addresses these issues.

Using her own experiences, and stories she shares from other people, Renee gives us a framework in which to handle breakups. Not only does she address those questions we all ask about what's the right way to breakup with someone, but she also gets to the heart issues that we must address with God.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to handle breakups in a way that honors God and honors yourself! After years of being single and experiencing a lot of heartbreak myself, which still brings me feelings of regret, I wish I had her book years ago! The clever, deadpan story is fun, but the droll illustrations, strong strokes of black lines washed with watercolors, ratchet the comedy up a notch or two. Like the other books in the series that began with the Caldecott Honor Book Click, Clack Moo: Cows That Type (2000), this amusing picture book makes a terrific read-aloud choice. Better than its predecessors!

I didn't think life got any better than Click Clack Moo, but Dooby Dooby Moo tops it. I love it! Dooby Dooby Moo is one of those rare books that holds enjoyment for kids and adults alike. Kids like the story of the talent show and each animal's attempts to win, while parents get to laugh their heads off at the pig's interpretive dance. It's a great read-aloud book because the adult can sing along (very easy tunes we all know) and kids love that part. I highly recommend Dooby Dooby Moo, especially to any lover of Farmer Brown's motley crew.

Fun and Clever Barnyard Tale!

"Dooby Dooby Moo" is the kids' equivalent of a light summer read. It's loads of fun, easy to follow, poses no great moral crises, and has a touch of suspence. Doreen Cronin's casual, sometimes silly tone is complemented by a wry narrative and visual wit, some smart references to pop culture, and appealingly informal watercolors with unexpected colors (especially in the shadings). Betsy Lewin excels at both minimalist pictures (e.g., two cows grazing), as well as panoramic landscapes (an exquisite night time overview of a county fair).

The plots goes something like this: Farmer Brown is suspicious (but ultimately without a clue) about the sounds coming from his barn. The animals snore with a Sinatra flair: "Dooby, dooby moo" (the cows). Fa, la, la, la, baaa(the sheep), and "Whacka, whacka quack (the duck). While this play on "Strangers in the Night" doesn't relate directly to the story, adult readers who enjoy the allusion. When the animals aren;t snoring, we discover, (although Farmer Brown doesn't know), they're praciticing for the county fair talent contest! THe cows and sheep sing--Here's the sheep's renditions of "Home on the Range":

"Baaa, baaa, baaa, baaabaaa.
Fa la baaa, fa la baaaa, baaaa baaa baaa!"

Cronin perfectly mimics the sounds! The pigs...well, the pigs practice "an interpretive dance," (shades of "Fantasia") which, unfortunately, puts everyone to sleep, including their tenacious singing and dancing coach, the duck. Farmer Brown, distrusting his noisy animals, takes them with him to the county fair, exactly what they wanted! Cronin and Lewin earn the gold medal for their parady of pre-performance routines. Duck, somewhat of an anxious perfectionist, paces back and forth, the precious pigs coif their hair, and the cows, acting very much the diva bovine, dainitly quoff their tea.

The judges generally love the singing (with the notable exception of one very grumpy cat), but even they fall asleep during the porcine dance. THere's a wonderful surprise ending as Duck (who's had his eye on the first prize trampoline) lets loose with his version of "Born to Be Wild!" RIght to the last page, Farmer Brown remains ignorant of his homegrown talent, and the new trampoline in his barn. The duo that produced the Caldecott Honor-winning "Click Clack, Moo: Cows That Type," and several other best selling and/or award-winning stories, have teamed for another delightful behind-the-scenes romp with farm animals. "Dooby, Dooby, Moo" is 35 pages of light, lively entertainment.

If It's Cronin, It HAS To Be Five Stars!

In our library, we can't keep her books on the shelves, and the once-again winning combination of her words with Betsy Lewin's pictures just cannot be beat. Our small patrons love her books on one level, while their parents are getting a kick out of them on a totally different one. I always appreciate authors who understand that they have two audiences, after all, and Ms. Cronin feeds both appetites. The clever, gentle humor of this book will be welcomed by discerning parents, and by the end, I am sure of two things: Farmer Brown will never catch on, and I will never hear "Born To Be Wild" again without thinking of the beloved Duck.

About the Author
Leonard Sax, M.D., Ph.D., is a family physician, research psychologist, and acclaimed author of Why Gender Matters. He is founder and executive director of the National Association for Single Sex Public Education in Montgomery County, Maryland (NASSPE). This book will change your view of raising and educating boys!

As a high school teacher and principal for 30 years now, I read Dr. Sax's book with great interest and appreciation! He is not a theoretician, but has been "in the trenches" making first-hand observations through years of medical practice. He has coupled that with applicable scientific research that points to five conclusions that may not be "Politically Correct" -- nor easily adopted in our public school system -- but resonate for sure! Other reviews here - and even the cover of the book - delineate the five factors he develops in the book, but the list doesn't do justice to his premise. Please READ THE BOOK -- your thinking and understanding will be changed and you will be motivated to make what changes you can for the benefit of the upcoming generations of boys. I plan to buy several copies to give to families in my school and faith community! Thankfully, in the small school where I work, and through our church, we can implement many of his recommendations. After reading this book I feel motivated and empowered to do just that!

My son is in college now but it took (takes sometimes) quite a bit of pushing and motivation to get him there. I always wondered why he was not more excited about his future. My husband and are both educated and work really hard and in my mind this should have just rubbed off on our son. He has always seen us work, clean up after ourselves, keep our home organized, take care of our things etc. We have always included him in these things and all of the fun things we do because we can afford to. I just thought he would see this and understand this as he matured and he would want the same or even better. I was completely wrong . This child who was taught to help in the kitchen, clean his room and bathroom, and at a certain age do his own laundry seem to have lost all will to even move. Hygiene was out the door, studying became torture, he lumbered to do tasks assigned and then barely did them. His interest was video games and surfing the web. This book answered quite a few questions for me. I only wish I would have read this book when he was in high school. During high school his interest in studying and being good at academics just took a dive. He just did not care. My husband and I tried everything we knew how to try to keep him going. Not everything in this book applied to us but quite a bit of it did. As with anything you read you must use your judgment. I discussed this book with my son and even bought him a copy for his iPad because at his age I cannot force him to do anything but I can share knowledge so he can understand why he feels the way he does some times. The part about video games and other internet interaction really hit home with me. The part about going out and getting hands on experience really hit home with me also. I bought this book for my sister who has a 9 year old son. My hope is that this book will help her keep my nephew motivated.

Lots of food for thought

As the mother of four teenage males, I found this book fascinating and would highly recommend it to parents, teachers, and pretty much anyone else. There has been a lot of discussion of this topic, and I haven't read any other books on it, so I can't compare them, but this one offers a lot of food for thought, backed up by both research studies and the author's personal experiences.

I live in Kuwait, and (contrary to what people might think) we have some of the same things going on; girls work harder and do better in school, 2/3 of the university students are women, and women earn graduate degrees at a higher rate than men do. Many boys (and men) are spending a lot of time on video games, too; some are not getting jobs and getting married, which is a new phenomenon. On the other hand, schools are single-sex (except for a few private American and British schools), ADD/ADHD medications haven't become popular, and families still have strong ties. So it was interesting to compare and contrast the situations.

Results that are legit!!

I'm writing to tell you this program truly works. I started this program this past winter being 5'6 168lbs and 17%BF which is was upsetting. With a lean diet and macro split of 40/30/30 within 10 weeks I was down to 152lbs 6%BF with abs!! Follow the program to exactly what the book says, watch your diet and the results are there. Don't waste your money on anything else. Proven results!!

This eBook was recommended to me by a friend. I've been lifting big for five years and play in a men's hockey league.

The program helped me hit my 405 lbs squat!!! 'Nuff said, right? :-) But seriously, this was a huge accomplishment - I struggled in the high 3s for a looong time. I'm now a lot faster and more powerful on the ice, too; my teammates can attest. The program is intense, probably not good for a beginner. I like the body-weight days - allows you to increase your volume but do so free from injury (I've had lower back issues from a jet ski accident).

Searched around but can't find anything else from this author. Would like to read his other stuff if anyone knows where to find.

Great overall training program that delivered real results. If followed as instructed, you will finish the program stronger, leaner and more powerful than when you started. Used many different programs through my 10 years of weight and athletic training and this has been the best overall program I've used.

About the Author
Jane Kroger is Professor of Psychology, University of Tromsø, in Tromsø, Norway. She holds a Ph.D. in Child Development. She has published numerous theoretical and research articles on issues of identity and is author of Identity in Adolescence: The Balance between Self and Other, 3rd edition and editor of Discussions on Ego Identity. She has been a visiting scholar at the Erik H. and Joan M. Erikson Center at Harvard University and also at the Henry A. Murray Center for the Study of Lives. She is currently president of the Society for Research on Identity Formation.

In Identity Development: Adolescence through Adulthood, Kroger (2000) focuses on the early, middle, and late periods of both adolescence and adulthood. She not only provides research which is applicable to Erikson�s psychosocial theory of development, but also offers her own view points in regards to this premise. Furthermore, Kroger writes of the necessity for additional studies concerning Erikson�s psychosocial point of view of each of the phases of life addressed.
To begin, this book is immediately intriguing due to its use of Erikson�s psychosocial theory. Of all the developmental theories, this must be the one which includes the most comprehensive look at development throughout the lifespan. By using challenges that are faced during particular phases of development, Erikson specifically outlines developmental tasks that must be completed as well as those which must be avoided.
Kroger separates the text into three parts, devoting Part I to the discussion of perceptions of the wholism of identity. Erikson is given credit for the original idea of such wholistic identity perspectives. His theory encompasses the suggestion that the attainment of an identity is a mission that must be fulfilled during adolescence in order to pursue and complete additional tasks in adulthood. In addition to Erikson�s theory, Kroger discusses other frameworks in which the study of identity may be approached.
In Part II, Kroger discusses adolescence. This part is divided into segments pertaining to early adolescence, middle adolescence, and late adolescence. She begins each segment by discussing the biological, psychological, and societal influences that accompany the three stages of adolescence. Next, she discusses developmental tasks that are faced during adolescence and the way in which these tasks affect identity development. Some of these specific developmental tasks are puberty, sexuality, vocation decisions, and the development of values. Finally, at the end of each segment, Kroger discusses specific contexts that affect identity development. Each context is viewed in relation to the stage of adolescence being studied. Specific contexts include family, friendships and peer groups, and educational and work settings.
The final part of the text is set up quite similar to Part II. However, in Part III, Kroger discusses early adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood. Biological, psychological, and societal influences pertaining to each stage of adulthood are discussed at the beginning of each segment. Developmental tasks faced during the three stages of adulthood are also discussed, including identity, intimacy, generativity, and integrity. Finally, Kroger discusses specific contexts affecting the development of identity during adulthood. These contexts include the family and social network, the career, and association with one�s community.
The way in which Kroger designs the framework for her text is logical and allows for easy comprehension. By designing Part II and Part III to be so similar, one is able to read the text in an orderly fashion that allows for easier understanding. At the end of both of these parts, Kroger discusses, in depth, selected issues that may have an effect on identity development during adolescence and/or adulthood. Some of these specific issues include adoption, ethnicity, the loss of an intimate relationship, and infertility. This is certainly the most interesting part of the text. While reading this section, one is simply able to see how specific issues (even as tiny as they may appear) can have a profound effect on identity development.
According to Kroger (2000), the main point of Identity Development: Adolescence through Adulthood is to examine �how my biology, psychology, and society interact to produce that subjective sense of the person who is �genuinely me�� as well as �how I can meaningfully express who I am� in social contexts (p. 7). She presents answers to these questions given by individuals in each stage of development discussed. This not only adds character to the text, but also aids in the understanding of how Erikson�s stages apply to the development of identity.
One might note that the responses to the afore-mentioned questions change significantly during each stage of development. This illustrates the development of identity in relation to specific tasks which are being faced during that stage. Finally, this understanding may aid in the realization that each task is dependent upon the completion of another. In other words, much like development itself, Kroger�s text consists of parts that build upon one another to make a single completion.

Good service but more used than I expected

The book arrived quickly, but was more used than I had expected from the description. There is some bending in the cover and quite a large amount of highlighting throughout the book.
