About the Author
Reginald Owen Morris was a British composer and teacher. He was born in York and was educated at Harrow School, New College, Oxford and the Royal College of Music in London, where he subsequently became professor of counterpoint and composition. Morris was considered a brilliant teacher of counterpoint, and wrote a number of influential texts on the subject. Students of Morris included composers Gerald Finzi, Sir Michael Tippett, Constant Lambert, Robin Milford, Anthony Milner, Edmund Rubbra, Bernard Stevens and Jean Coulthard.

This is a terrible text.

Terrible musical excerpts. There is such a large body of early music that could have been authentically used for these examples. It is much more effective and accurate if you "don't listen to what you are playing." The voice leading is at times not intuitive, and the explanations heading each section are lacking in clarity and depth. This publication is a miss for me, and my entire class.

If you know Volume 1 and you learned a lot from it or found it to be a valuable way to learn keyboard harmony- then you will enjoy this. Does not introduce as Mach new material as No. 1 but along the lines of of harmony found in a Bach chorale.

The results are not good

Yes, this book is brief and easy to read. Yes, this book offers a simple method of trading. However, books of this nature should be evaluated based on the results. I signed up as a member on the author's website and observed the activities for about a month. There have been very, very few trades (perhaps the author does not reveal all of his trades). The author is NOT even using the entry method as taught in this book so this book is outdated. Since I have not observed much success from that membership site, I came to the conclusion that the method taught in this book doesn't work.

SIMPLY THE BEST BOOK ON DAY TRADING.

This is simply the best guide to day trading out there.I have read two other day trading books and they were nowhere near as comprehensive, concise, and organized.

This guide is simple and straight to the point. No BS and no redundancy used to lengthen the book, but rather used tastefully to strengthen retention of core elements of the profitable strategy.

It was such an easy read that I sat down with a cup of coffee and finished the book at the same time I finished sipping at my mug.

Despite it being a quick-read, it was full of more information than other books I have read.

I will update this review with the success of this strategy, but I can tell you from my 2 years of experience in the stock market and knowledge acquired from other books that this guide is "on point."

UPDATE:

It has been a while since I made this review. I have personally used this strategy for a while now with great success. This strategy has worked for me. I have made more profit on trades with this strategy than losses and the profits were quite big on some days. I still highly recommend this guide.

Note I've been trading for about 6 months, so I had a basic understanding of what the author was trying to say. The good: Quick and to the point, solid information, and gave me a few new perspectives I hadn't previously thought of. The not good: I think there's a discussion missing on float. And because this is geared towards new traders, I think it needs to speak more about lowering unrealistic expectations.

About the Author
Ning Lu is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Colorado School of Mines and his primary research in the past decade has concentrated on hillslope hydrology and slope stability. He is the senior author of Unsaturated Soil Mechanics (John Wiley and Sons, 2004) and has also published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on unifying effective stress in variably saturated porous media. Professor Lu is a recipient of the Norman Medal and the Croes Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers for his seminal work on defining suction stress in variably saturated soils.

Jonathan Godt is a Research Physical Scientist with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and has worked on landslide hazard problems for more than fifteen years, both in the US and around the world. His research focuses on monitoring and understanding landslide processes to improve tools for landslide hazard assessment and forecasting. He has published numerous reports, maps and journal articles on the subject of landslide hazards.

About the Author
Johnny Allen was the foundation director of the Australian Centre for Event Management (ACEM) at the University of Technology, Sydney where he is now associate director, business development. He was event manager for the Darling Harbour Authority from 1989 to 1996, and has an extensive career in event planning. Prior to his position at the ACEM, he was the special event manager for Tourism New South Wales. Johnny is now semi-retired but continues his involvement with event management and event education.

William O’Toole is an international events development specialist. He assists councils, cities, regions, countries and companies to grow their events portfolio and write their strategies. For five years he advised the Supreme Commission forTourism in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the development of their tourism event program in the thirteen provinces. Bill trains and assists the United Nations event organisers in places such as the Sudan and Uganda and is facilitating the development of the event industry in Kenya. He is a founding director of the Event Management Body of Knowledge and key adviser to the International Event Management Competency Standard. From Scotland to Johannesburg, he has trained events staff in the application of project and risk management to their events. Bill has been involved in events innovation, creation, operations, management and strategy in over 30 countries. He is currently writing a textbook on events feasibility and development.

Rob Harris has been involved in event management, education and research for over 10 years and has developed undergraduate, postgraduate and TAFE programs in the area. Rob teaches programs in event management in a number of countries around the world including England, Scotland, Singapore, China, Malaysia and New Zealand. He is a founding Director of the New South Wales Festivals and Events Association and is a member of the editorial board of the journals Event Management and International Journal of Event Management Research . He is currently completing his doctoral studies in the use of events as tools in driving the ecologically sustainable development agenda of the places where they take place.

Ian McDonnell is a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Business’s School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) where he teaches management and marketing of leisure and tourism services. He, along with Johnny Allen, constructed the very fi rst academic course in event management in Australia and perhaps the world – the Executive Certifi cate in Event Management held at UTS in 1996. He soon discovered that there was no useful text book for a course of this type, hence the origin of the this text, now in its fi fth edition. He continues to research in event management, particularly the sponsorship of events.

Although this book refers only to Australian festivals and events, it's loaded with management lessons, concepts and strategies that are universal. This is the best book I've been able to find on a subject that is scarcely written about (referring to large festivals). Lencioni begins the discussion concerning overcoming the five dysfunctions of a team by asking two questions that should be asked BEFORE any team building effort:

1. Are we really a team?

2. Are we ready for heavy lifting?

His definition of a team, "a relatively small number of people...that shares common goals as well as the rewards and responsibilities for achieving them" seems logical enough, but what I really liked was his overall attitude. He seemed to suggest that if your group isn't a team, well that's OK too, but regardless, be clear about who and what you are. The heavy lifting reference simply means that building a team, similar to any marriage or other worthwhile relationship, takes a considerable investment in time and emotional energy.

Dysfunction #1 is the absence of trust, so building trust is the key to overcoming this first dysfunction. Lencioni's definition of trust in one where vulnerability is paramount thus beginning to trust starts with showing vulnerability, usually by telling some personal history story that includes some important challenge that was overcome during childhood. The reasoning for this is based on something called the fundamental attribution error. Simply stated, this is the tendency to attribute (falsely) the negative behavior of others to their character while attributing our own negative behavior to the environment. In other words, I do bad things because of the situation I've been placed in, while you do bad things because you are a bad person. This personal story exercise helps individuals to understand each other at a more fundamental level by showing how each person became the individual that they are, at least in some small way. Lencioni's second exercise deals with behavior profiling (he recommends the MBTI for various reasons) in order to "give team members an objective, reliable means for understanding and describing one another" (p. 25). This is designed to facilitate individuals' discussion of strengths/weaknesses, and begin to make it "safe" at least in terms of constructive feedback.

Dysfunction #2 is fear of conflict and overcoming this fear, while admittedly uncomfortable at times, is essential in order to maximize a team's effectiveness. Lencioni argues that inevitability of discomfort is no reason to avoid conflict and goes on to describe a sort of conflict continuum where the ideal conflict point lies directly midway between artificial harmony and mean-spirited personal attacks. In order to engage in productive conflict, he advocates conflict profiling (MBTI and/or Thomas-Kilmann Instrument). This is important in order to understand all team members' comfort levels and viewpoints regarding conflict. Conflict norms among teams must be discussed, negotiated, and made clear and available. Lastly, there are times when an effective leader must "mine" for that productive conflict among respective team members especially if individuals are avoiding necessary, progressive conflict.

Dysfunction #3 is lack commitment and is best overcome by gaining buy-in and achieving clarity. Buy-in is not to be confused with consensus, and in fact, true commitment is about getting buy-in when all the team members don't agree. Clarity allows members to benefit from their commitment by removing assumptions and the accompanying frustrations. Lencioni discusses two techniques to best overcome this third dysfunction called commitment clarification and cascading communication. Commitment clarification deals with leaders asking: What exactly have we decided here today? This ensures that everyone leaves a meeting with the same impressions. Cascading communication demands that team members communicate these same impressions to the rest of the staff within 24 hours, again ensuring that everyone is on the same page.

Dysfunciton #4 is the avoidance of accountability. Lencioni argues that accountability is the willingness of team members to remind each other when they are not living up to whatever standards have been agreed upon by the group. This not only involves the leader, but peer-to-peer accountability is integral as well. Interestingly, most leaders are willing to hold team members accountable for results, but not so much for behavioral issues. When this filters down to the team members, and they become reticent to hold others accountable for their behavior, the result seems to be a lack of respect. Lencioni's team effectiveness exercise seems to be an effective method for beginning to hold others accountable by openly discussing each person's (including the leader) most important quality that contributes to or derails the strength of the team.

Dysfunction #5 is the inattention to results. Lencioni suggests that self-preservation and self-interest make this a difficult handicap to overcome. The key lies in keeping the results where members of the team can see them at all times, i.e. a visible scoreboard of some sort. How should these results be measured? It doesn't really matter, as long as the team has one or two items that they can consistently focus on and rally around. Distractions include egos, career advancement, and departmental priorities. Key points for negating this dysfunction are avoiding the distractions, and staying focused on clear, visible results.

Lencioni also goes into depth regarding many common questions, and obstacles to avoid. Additionally, he includes a host of exercises, schedules, definitions, and references that can be tailored to facilitate the team building process in any organization. I found that this book offers specific, practical guidance toward team building that any novice should be able to understand. Additionally, the tools, assessments and examples provided a clear picture of a roadmap to overcoming the five dysfunctions of a team. In short, an easy read, full of practical ideas and examples that bring the points home.

This does give exercises that go with the book if you want to use it in training sessions and it leads you through how to use the concepts with your team. I think it would be valuable in an intact team. I used one of the exercises with a staff retreat recently with some success. I think it will take a skilled facilitator to use it, though.

Quick, easy, and practical

I'm not a big fan of management books because they tend to get long-winded, technical, and impractical. This book is none of the three.

I did not read the original book "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable" (240 pages), but with this field guide, you don't need to read it. The field guide is 180 pages of easy reading. It's not complicated, very practical, and you don't need to be a CEO to implement the concepts.

I was pleasantly surprised and would recommend this book to anyone who labors in futility on a fumbling team. It's worth your time.
