Best book of its kind

I've long recommended Pike's "Notes on Programming in C" on my web page. This book includes most of the content from that essay and much more, but is still thin and concise.
What I like most about this book is that they justify all of their recommendations, show both good and bad examples, and keep the discussion grounded in actual code (rather than abstract principles).
Other things I liked:
- begins with a discussion of programming style and aesthetics
- they critique some of the designs that they have been involved in, such as C's stdio and string handling libraries
- they discuss the unique design issues presented by library design
- they give examples in C, C++ and Java, and give an honest appraisal of the tradeoffs involved in each language.
- FINALLY, excellent single chapter descriptions of systematic approaches to debugging and testing!
- they face up to some of the tough design choices that must be made outside the UNIX Ivory Tower (rare for these authors). For example, they sacrifice UNIX consistency in one application so that the application will behave consistently across UNIX and Windows.
Minor gripes:
- still skirts around tough design issues in error recovery and reporting; they advocate the "print a diagnostic and exit" approach (which is totally inappropriate for library code), and don't discuss the tradeoffs
- a few of the principles they cover will be trivial or obvious for experienced programmers

Simple and excellent

I am bemused by the disparaging comments of my fellow readers in regard to this book. Kernighan and Pike make clear their intent in the first paragraph of the preface to this book; it is about simplicity, clarity, and generality.
To be sure, there is tinder here for short tempers and delicate egos. If you're under the gun, trying to duct-tape together the fifth release of some huge, unwieldy application, this book does not contain the short-term quick fixes you've been hoping for. If you're righteously convinced of your own sound practices and don't care to look at someone else's methods, this book may irk you.
Kernighan and Pike have written a book about the most basic habits and outlook that a programmer should have. They have not tried to address all facets of programming. Instead, they sacrifice scope to make their points stand out all the more clearly.
Would this be a better book if they had cast their net wider? Hardly. If you start off by applying the carefully thought out, methodical approaches described clearly throughout this book, your code will still hit abstruse bumps and strange circumstances. But most problems will succumb to the same analytical ways of thinking and tools that Kernighan and Pike have laboured to describe with such clarity.
But don't imagine that I think this book is perfect; the authors have been doing many things in the same ways for a long time. Most often, this is because their methods are effective, but sometimes they are far too close to being cop-outs. For example, the idea that it's OK to just print an error message and bomb out if something goes wrong is laughable outside of the Unix command line environment, and is rarely appropriate even there.
Fundamentally, though, if you can't solve the problems at the ends of the chapters (they're easy), or you think you can't possibly benefit from reading a book that troubles to describe quicksort (which you probably learned in CS-201), then there is likely nothing for you here. At least until you think to question your perspectives. Until then, I'll confess to a sense of relief that I don't have to work with you :-)

Best General Programming Book in Years

The book covers topics such as style, design, interfaces, notation, debugging, testing, performance tuning, and portability. Each of these topics gets its own chapter and is covered pretty throughly.

The writing is generally very interesting though at times it does get a little too much into details. It must have been interesting. I have finished reading it in less than 24 hours after having received it. This is something I've never done with a computer book before!!

The book does live up to its goal. I think any programmer (even with 20 years of experience) who reads this book will gain something from reading it.
Before you think that I think the book is perfect, I will point out some areas where I think it could be improved. First, I think the book is too focused on C. This is not surprising given that Kernighan is one of the authors. Personally, I have always believed that C is a language that encourages bad programming practices. In a few places in the book, I see some of those in the code that is presented. The other area I was disappointed in was that there was not much on object-oriented programming practices. Beyond that, I saw something I do not believe should be in any good OO program. That something was a public instance variable. A few places I disagreed with the authors on style issues. However, all of these problems are fairly minor and will hopefully be corrected in the next edition.

In conclusion, I think this is a book that all programmers should read at least once. I know I will keep my copy on my shelf for those times when I have questions like "how can I optimize this code?". It really is the best general programming book that has been published in years.

Fun complimentary activity for child's devotions/Bible study

My son has a child's devotional bible. I purchased Amazing Mazes for Kids for him and he really enjoys using it as part of his devotions. The two books go nicely together. What I like about this book is that there are some very cleverly designed mazes (made of musical instruments scattered about, bricks layed out for drying, wheat stalks, Samson's hair, waves on the sea, scales of a fish, herds of sheep, and so on...) as well as the standard lined labyrinths. There are even a few word searches and puzzles. There's a very nice mix in the difficulty range. The mazes/puzzles are all printed in black, preceded by a brief account of the story that the maze applies to. One thing that would have improved the book would have been the inclusion of one maze or puzzle for each book of the Bible. Beyond that, I feel this was a worthy purchase.

A Superb learning Text for SketchUp as Applied to Woodworking!

I used to use high end 3-D CAD software on my job. When I retired I wanted a replacement that didn't cost a bundle. I tried using the free program SketchUp but the tutorials were not easy to follow or apply to hobby woodworking. I decided to make one more try and went looking for a good book. Thankfully I stumbled onto this one, and it is superb. Exactly geared to learn and master the software for the amateur or more advanced craftsman. The step by step instruction builds and challenges the student, and the format makes it simple to go back and retread the parts that need reinforcement. Excellent from every perspective. If CAD for woodworking is what you want, you must get this book!

A great way to learn the ways and workings of SketchUp even if you are not a woodworker.

This book is well calibrated for new SketchUp users of normal intelligence and is a great follow on to the four "Getting Started" videos posted on the SketchUp learning center website.

Until recently there have not been many good books on SketchUp, so I learned the program primarily from YouTube, but I sure wish I had this book four years ago when I started out. It would have saved hours of frustration. Mr. Zeh has written an outstanding guide to the program, giving the beginner and even more advanced users valuable advice on how to configure the workspace, and manage the workflow as well as how to draw.

Mr. Zeh provides a brief introduction, and then, in chapter one, gives thorough instructions on how to download and install the program. He guides you through setting up the workspace and tool bars for efficient work. His instructions work with the free and the pro versions of SketchUp 2014, 2015, and 2016, so no worries about whether your software matches the book. This book is written for the Windows version, but the differences between it and the Mac version are slight, so no worries there either.

Chapter 02 gives a concise explanation of most of the tools in SketchUp and is a section I keep bookmarked for reference. I've filled it with sticky notes and marginalia, but it is probably not a chapter you will read from beginning to end.

Part 2 of the book contains 7 chapters that guide the reader through the drawing of a simple bedside table. Each chapter focuses on a different component of the table and each component is used as a vehicle for teaching more and better techniques, so that while you might have already discovered better and faster ways to perform a particular task, it makes sense to follow his instructions. Likely you will learn something new.

Chapter 03 is crammed full of information and work habit training which will convert you from a halting beginner, hashing your way through a drawing project, to a quick and confident draftsman. Readers with SOME SketchUp experience may bridle a bit at the painstaking ways he has you draw four simple table legs, but in later chapters, it suddenly becomes clear why he took such pains as the program begins to sing for you. It is the most challenging chapter in the book, but once you are through it, you will know a huge fraction of the things you need to know to draw efficiently, and the remaining chapters will go quickly.

Chapter 04 proceeds with the aprons and drawer rails of the table and introduces the drawing techniques to create them. The following chapters bring in additional components and the additional techniques you need to draw them. In the end, you get a set of accurate measured drawings you can take into the shop.

My recommendation? Order this book today and then go to the SketchUp website and download the program. While you are waiting for this book to arrive, work through the four "Getting Started" videos on the SketchUp website. This will leave you primed and raring to go when Mr. Zeh's book arrives.

When the book does arrive, read chapter one and set up your workspace as instructed. Skim Chapter 2 and relate the contents to what you learned from the videos. Then, step away from the computer, sit down, and read chapter 3 all the way through. After that, go back to the computer and complete each of the drawings. If you make mistakes, don't sweat it. Electrons are cheap, so start a new file and give it another go.

Mr. Zeh suggests that once you complete each chapter, go back and redraw until you can complete the drawing from memory. I think that is great advice. It took me a couple of hours to get through Chapter 2 the first time, about 15 minutes the second, and under five the third time. Subsequent chapters went much faster and while I have not yet finished the book, I am drawing much faster and I am able to create much more complex forms quickly and with confidence.

I am currently teaching an introduction to SketchUp to my middle school shop students and once I had this book in hand, I substantially rewrote the curriculum and greatly raised my expectations of what I expected them to learn in a 4 weeks. I think adults who learn from this book will be able to nail SketchUp to the floor in maybe two long weekends.

Watching a master designer at work

As a woodworker who has used Sketchup to design products such as chests, tables, shelving, built-ins, I still found this book useful. I taught myself Sketchup and found, comparing my ways with the way Zeh designs which he demonstrates step by illustrates step, that while I had found ways to do what I needed to do, there are more efficient and elegant steps. I could do without the occasional schoolmasterly tone, but the book interestingly explains simple click by simple click and move by move how best to design with Sketchup, in this case a bedside table. I learned a lot. A good investment of my time and money.
