Harry MacLean is a lawyer and writer based in Denver, Colorado. He is the author of In Broad Daylight, which won an Edgar Award for Best True Crime and was a New York Times bestseller for twelve weeks; his second book, Once Upon A Time: A True Story of Memory, Murder, and the Law was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year; and his third book, The Past Is Never Dead: The Trial of James Ford Seale and Mississippi's Search for Redemption was shortlisted for the William Saroyan Award, given by Stanford University.

I accept that the way I tell the story of that night on the train might not be the way it actually happened, in specific detail, in exact rhythm and tone and sequence; this version has received a little lacquer here and there as life piled up on it; to simplify it or make it feel better or cleaner a few facts have possibly been dropped out or slipped in; perhaps even a few images have been recolored or restored to a brightness they never had. That’s what time and the mind do, for better or worse, and only a fool would deny it. Through the window I can see the purple black between the stars, and the moon rising in the corner, and I think this night, as that one, can’t last; the black will begin to fade slowly to gray, and the morning light will bring with it the end.

Disappointed With Ending

I was sold on this book before I read it because I'd heard the author speak at a book signing. I liked him immediately and appreciated all he had to say about his experience as a writer/reader. I have not read any of his previous (non fiction) books, but have downloaded one on my MP3 player (In Broad Daylight). I have not listened to it yet. I was excited to read his 1st novel "Joy of Killing", & despite being a rather slow reader, I finished it in two sittings. I just finished it this eve, and am sorry to admit that I was left disappointed. The writing is definitely exemplary. The book held my attention throughout. As a psychologist, I was fascinated by the mental torture of the protagonist, and his vacillation between his recollection of events, and his being admittedly unsure regarding the accuracy of those memories. That all rang true to me - not uncommon in insightful individuals. However the ending left me unsatisfied. I know from hearing the author speak, that the ending of a novel was critical to him as an author. He was determined to not make the same mistakes of other authors whose book conclusions were fraught with problems, trying up details too quickly or leaving many unanswered questions. I do not want to write a "spoiler" review, so I will not give details of the specifics why I was left disappointed with the ending. "Joy of Killing":is definitely worth reading. I will look forward to read more reviews of this book. So far 18 of the 19 reviews have all been 5 stars. So my being unhappy with the ending is definitely in the minority.

The Joy of Killing makes me question what's wrong with me since I liked it so much... very dark

Whoa!! The Joy of Killing is twisted!! Makes me wonder what's wrong with me that I liked it so much. This took psychological thriller to the next level. I was unable to put it down even though I wanted to take a break to eat or walk my dog I just could not put it down. I still don't know if I got it but I loved it. It's kind of like a mix between the writing of Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk and the Inception movie and maybe a little Sixth Sense rolled into one messed up book. I would highly highly recommend if you're a fan of suspense/thrillers.

Spellbinding, psychological thriller

Romantic, erotic and tender - frightening, menacing, violent: the two sides of a man revealed in a deeply compelling psychological mystery.
This novel kept me under its spell entirely. And the truths it reveals about the place of longing, guilt, shame, doubt and delusion in the life of its protagonist are profound for all men, and the women who love them.
