An Absolute MUST for any Die-Hard Tolkien Fan

I've tried reading this book on several occasions, but have always been forced to put it down. As a college student, life can get pretty busy. By the time I finally got around to picking up where I left off, I had trouble remembering what was happening in the narrative. The Silmarillion's rich and complicated writing style is certainly not for the casual fan. However, that does not mean it isn't worth reading. This is the lore of Tolkien's world, it's beginnings, it's troubles, and the people who inhabit it. It's darker than either of Tolkien's more popular works, "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings", and I'd say that's a good thing. The drama is compelling, the language is beautiful, and the characters, while not entirely fleshed out (this isn't a novel, it's a book of lore), are interesting throughout. If you want to know more about Tolkien's epic and breathtaking creation, as well as get all the subtle references to the past sprinkled throughout "The Lord of the Rings", then this book is for you.

Reads like the bible in the beginning of every chapter and like the lord of the rings 3/4 of the way through each chapter. The names of any of the valar would make awesome band names. The nonsensical-sounding LOTR-speak in the movies makes perfect sense after reading this. names, origins, geographic regions, the dark feeling covering everything, all explained.

The history book you weren't expecting to read...

But really, in all honesty, you'll never REALLY and truly understand The Lord of the Rings trilogy, or for that matter, most of The Hobbit if you're not at least marginally familiar with The Silmarillion. It's a tough nut to crack at first, it reads a little like the Old Testament (which Tolkien was trying to avoid, read the forwards) but once the begats are over and the stories of how the world came to be begin, you'll be hooked and I was honestly pained to put it down to do things like sleep and go to work.

Clinical neurology, another great LANGE textbook

This is a easy to read short text on neurology. It covers all areas, but is not overly technical. This is a great book for general practioners to review neurology or medical students prepairing for boards. The topics are up to date and well referenced. The book has great pictures and diagrams, and follows the typical "LANGE" format. This is a great book to read quickly in one months time or during a clinical rotation.

Hazel Soan is a popular and successful artist who divides her time between London and Cape Town, exhibiting her work widely. Beautiful and inspiring book

[[VIDEOID:moKX0MXUAZHBV]]I've no idea who Hazel Soan is when I bought the book. Now, I'm a fan of her work.

The Essence of Watercolour contains very beautiful and inspiring paintings.

I like her suggestive style, which is to draw just enough and let the mind fill in the rest. Her use of wet on wet for blending colours is masterful and the pastel colours used are a joy to look at. It reminds me of the feeling you get when you watch a beautiful sunset.

Accompanying the paintings are brief but insightful instructions that are easy to try. There are lessons on transparency, layering, experimenting with colours, understanding brushstrokes and other watercolour techniques. Even though the watercolour tips are not unique to this book, it's always interesting to read it from the perspective of different artists.

Highly recommended to watercolour lovers.

Valuable lessons

This used book was delivered in very short order. I was anxious to get this book as it was shown to me in class and some of the lessons I needed were detailed in word and pictures. I refer to this book nearly every day. The photos are astounding and the words very clear. A valuable learning tool.

What a beautiful and surprisng book! Hazel Soan's book is just wonderful to look at. I am still working through her Explore pages, in which she gives little projects to work on the chapter subjects: transparancy, wet-on-wet, etc., but the book is excellent just for the the examples of the author's works, which are terrific! I love the mixture of London street scenes with African wildlife (elephants, warthogs, sleeping lions), or with quiet gardens in Italy. A great body of work.

I took this book to my watercolor class and showed it to my fellow students and the instructor, who were equally enthusiastic as I was. Hopefully, as I work through the exercises, I will come to love this book even more than I do already!

A most interesting perspective!

It's lots of fun to see a very well written story from the perspective of a dragon civilization rather than the usual human side of things. There are so many small details to that and the book handles them all really well, while at the same time matching an interesting, unpredictable plot with it. Very much worth the read!
