About the Author
Charles Grippo is an attorney, producer, and playwright. He owns New Lincoln Theatre Productions, Holiday Road, and Charles Grippo Productions. In Chicago, he has produced plays by Neil Simon, David Mamet, and Kathleen Tolan. His plays, which include Sex Marks the Spot, Bedroom Follies, A Wife's Tale, Santa's Children, The Tooth of the Matter, Salvage Job, and Wait for the Wind, have been produced by theater companies in New York, Chicago, and California. His adaptation of Wait for the Wind was published in Hardboiled Detective in 1995. He has written articles on theater law for the Chicago Alliance for Playwrights and is currently working on a novel in the legal thriller genre about a female attorney. A member of the Dramatists Guild and director emeritus of Chicago Alliance for Playwrights, he practices entertainment and real estate law.

Useful Contract Templates With An Artists' Bias

This book provides a nice starting point for artists to use when engaging in negotiations for their work. He does a nice job explaining legal terms and the reasoning behind each clause. However, I find the contracts quite slanted in the artist's favor so if you are looking for contracts to use as the producer know that you'll probably want to adapt these further and have your own lawyer look them over before sending to an artist for signature.

Almost everything I needed

This book is amazing! Recently I was doing a theatre production and needed some contracts. This book was easy to understand, the CD made it so easy to get the contracts I needed in doc format and alter them as I needed.

Much of this book is based on Union workers, but again can be easily altered. My only quibble is the writers contract. I wish there was a better writers contract, something more simple. The one in this book will definitely cover most if not all the bases.

For the price, this book is totally worth having around. Especially if you are working in production

About the Author

Zaretta Hammond is a former classroom English teacher who has been doing instructional design, school coaching, and professional development around the issues of equity, literacy, and culturally responsive teaching for the past 18 years.  She teaches as a lecturer at St. Mary’s College’s Kalmanovitz School of in Moraga, California.

In addition to consulting and professional development, she has been on staff at national education reform organizations, including the National Equity Project and the former Bay Area School Reform Collaborative (BASRC).  She has trained instructional coaches in reading development, especially targeted at students of color and English learners.  She has also designed national seminars such as the three-day Teaching with A Cultural Eye series for teachers and school leaders. She is regularly invited to present at regional and national conferences. She has authored articles that have appeared in publications such as Phi Delta Kappan.

Along with a focus on culturally responsive teaching, Ms. Hammond has a strong research agenda around literacy, vocabulary development, and equity. She has designed culturally responsive tutor training programs aimed at volunteer reading tutors for a variety of non-profit organizations. She currently designing a literacy program to accelerate low reading skills among high school students. She holds a Masters in Secondary English Education.

She also writes the popular ready4rigor.com blog.  Zaretta is the proud parent of two young adult children, both of whom she taught to read before they went to school. She resides in Berkeley, CA with her husband and family.

A Revolution in Teaching

This book is fantastic, a triumph; a truly ground-breaking work that may forever change the way teachers in America face the challenges of their profession. I’ve been a teacher for over thirty years and always felt I was pretty damn good at it, as good as anybody. But about halfway through my reading of Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain, I was suddenly stuck by the horrific realization that if I had known when I started teaching what Zaretta Hammond writes in this book, I would have been not just a good teacher, but perhaps a great one. I have always been focused on getting my students--whatever ethnic or socio-economic background they might have sprung from--to be interested in their studies and to give it their all. I tried my damnedest to motivate them to want to excel, not just in school, but in life. I sometimes succeeded, sometimes didn’t. I always smugly thought nobody (well, almost nobody) could do a better job than I was doing. But Ms. Hammond’s book destroyed that glib notion quickly. Reading her book was like being repeatedly, page by page, hit in the head with a brick. Soon I could see with absolute clarity that I could and should overhaul my thinking and my methods. By following the techniques suggested in Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain I could make quantum strides in my individual approach to each of my students and be confident that every last one of them could reach for and achieve their best.

Before reading the book I’d thought of cultural responsive teaching as academic eduspeak sort of stuff, a fancy label for what good teachers have been doing all along--pumping up an underachieving kid’s self esteem, blah, blah, blah. But I now know I was dead wrong. When the teacher really gets tuned into a student’s culture and ethnic identity as described in Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain, the teacher forms a partnership of learning with the student that does more than just jack them up; it actually facilitates the growth of the student’s neuroplasticity (brain cell connections). How cool is that? Properly intellectually stimulated, a student will grow millions, if not hundreds of millions, new brain cells; brain cells with trillions of synaptic connections that will enable the student to think in more intellectually sophisticated ways, as a bulked-up muscle will enable an athlete to pump more iron. A pumped-up dependent learner is soon transformed into an independent learner. What is called the “achievement gap” between high functioning independent learners and low functioning dependent learners disappears.

Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain goes on to show how culture is the way that the brain makes sense of the world and forms our world view. We all adhere to two basic cultural archetypes, collective and individual. It tells you how to use these archetypes to create the environment to help the student to transcend the achievement gap in a step-by-step process that is complex, yet easy to follow. Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain is therefore a rich resource of techniques for transforming the lives of students. I’m sorry that I can only give it five stars: that’s the maximum that Amazon allows. It deserves ten. It’s readable, profound, and empowering. Using neuroscience, it brilliantly takes learning theory to a deeper level without being esoteric or pedantic. No teacher should get in front of a classroom until she or he has read and digested every paragraph of this book.

A Useful, Reader-Friendly, and Absolutely Necessary Book for All Teachers

I wish I'd had this book when I was in the classroom. Having worked with and struggled to find ways to boost the academic performance of students of color my whole teaching career, I see now what I was doing wrong. With this book in hand, I am certain I could have made more of a difference.

It is a thoughtful, holistic, brain-based approach to teaching the whole child. By looking through the lens of neuroscience, Zaretta Hammond shows us how the brain responds to various teaching approaches and learning environments, and helps us understand why, despite our best efforts, many students simply haven’t responded to the kinds of interventions many schools put in place for them. “The problem of the achievement gap won’t be solved by simply trying to motivate students of color to become more engaged learners,” she writes. “We have to create school environments that welcome their natural ways of learning and shape content so that they see its connection to their lives and funds of knowledge.”

Apart from being incredibly useful and clear, what’s great about this book is that it won’t make teachers defensive. Rather than attacking teachers for taking the wrong approach, Hammond simply shows us why some methods are ineffective, then explains why a different approach works better. This lack of judgment is likely to give her message a bigger reach, and to help far more teachers develop the skills they need for this important work.

This book belongs in the professional development libraries of every school: Perfect for a group book study or for individual use. For the sake of so many students who need us to know better and do better, I hope it finds its way into the hands of teachers everywhere.

Finally someone connects the dots between a developmental mindset and culturally relevant pedagogy. Can't do one without the other. Brain research alone won't get it done unless teaching practice reflects skilled and culturally relevant teaching — together these scaffold the the support and access to content that low income students of color need to succeed in school.

Much of what we do in classrooms is intuitive, steered by what 'feels right', but all too often intuition proves a poor, sometimes treacherous guide. Over the past few decades, psychological research has made real strides into understanding how we learn, but it's only in the last few years that education has become aware of these insights. Part of the problem is a tendency amongst teachers to resist being told 'what works' if it conflicts with intuition. Whilst we cannot and should not relinquish our professional judgement in the face of outlandish claims, we should at least be aware of what scientists have discovered about learning, thinking, motivation, behaviour and assessment over the past few decades.

This though is far easier said than done. Every year thousands of research papers are published, some of which contradict each other. How can busy teachers know which research is worth investing time in reading and understanding?

Here, David Didau and Nick Rose attempt to lay out the evidence and theoretical perspectives on what we believe are the most important and useful psychological principles of which teacher ought to be aware. That is not to say this book contains everything you might ever need to know - there is no way it could - it is merely a primer. About the Author

On the day of the murders, however, Brian saw something that he thinks might affect the case. The story is told in flashbacks as he struggles for his life after being shot–as readers will suspect–by the true killer. What might have been a straightforward mystery grows richer as Brian compares Amanda's father's situation to the 1913 Leo Frank murder case he is researching for class. Another thread follows the arrest of Brian's friend and basketball teammate Julius, one of the few African Americans in their small Indiana town. Brian must also cope with pressure from his father to excel in basketball, and with his overwhelming grief over Amanda's death. Some of the insights about the flaws in our justice system come across as preachy, but Brian's personal dilemma–should he speak out and make waves or keep his doubts to himself–prevent the story from turning into a lesson on social justice. This novel will resonate with readers long after the final page. I loved this book so much! I dont see how anyone couldn't. i read it for fun and it turned out to teach me a lot about love and about law. I can understand things more clearly by relating experiences to experiences of the characters. their lives are magnificently changing and understandable. i would reccomend this book to people who love teen murder mysteries and amazing pieces of writing that touch your heart. this book made me feel, it made me cry, it made me laugh. this book is about life and understanding the situation. the characters' struggles are real and exciting. this book is amazing.

I couldnt put this book down, but at some parts i had to, this story is very intense and that made it all the more lovely.

the murder of one boy's girlfriend turns into a path to life discovery, a path that leads to the meaning of everything. read this book and follow young Brian, go down the path with him. you will discover too.

This Author Deserves More Recognition

I read this book based on a student recommendation. What a welcome surprise. This author deserves much more recognition for her talent. I look at and read Young Adult books all the time, but I knew nothing of this book.

The Perfect Shot is a wonderful look at teen life and the struggles human beings go through when dealing with a loss. This book is also an experienced look at the struggles young adults go through when trying to figure out what their place is in this world.

The book does all of the above and accelerates the plot with a suspenseful ending that will leave the reader wanting to read whatever this author produces.

This book is a gem of a Young Adult book. This is a definite must-read.

Slow Start, But Worth It!

Like other reviewers, I think this is a great story. There are multiple levels to the plot--a murder mystery, a run at a basketball championship, a school project mirroring real life, a friendship tested. Even with all these elements working together, the story isn't convoluted. The start of the story, though, does drag a bit, especially compared to the fast pace of the rest of the novel. Overall a great read, though--another great one by this author!--and one that boys and girls alike would enjoy.

Since Pakistan was founded in 1947, its army has dominated the state. The military establishment has locked the country in an enduring rivalry with India, with the primary aim of wresting Kashmir from it. To that end, Pakistan initiated three wars over Kashmir-in 1947, 1965, and 1999-and failed to win any of them. Today, the army continues to prosecute this dangerous policy by employing non-state actors under the security of its ever-expanding nuclear umbrella. It has sustained a proxy war in Kashmir since 1989 using Islamist militants, as well as supporting non-Islamist insurgencies throughout India and a country-wide Islamist terror campaign that have brought the two countries to the brink of war on several occasions. In addition to these territorial revisionist goals, the Pakistani army has committed itself to resisting India's slow but inevitable rise on the global stage.

C. Christine Fair is an Assistant Professor in the Security Studies Program within Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. She previously served as a senior political scientist with the RAND Corporation, a political officer with the United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan in Kabul, and a senior research associate in the Center for Conflict Analysis and Prevention at the United States Institute of Peace.

A must read

It is a popular saying that while other countries have armies, in Pakistan the army has a country. Dr. Christine Fair, in this scholarly and well researched masterpiece of Pakistan’s defense literature brings out the strategic culture of the Pakistan army. Since the Pakistan army is the most organized and powerful institution in Pakistan, this strategic culture is the dominant strategic culture in Pakistan. The book organized into eleven chapters deals with every aspect of this strategic culture; its genesis and evolution, ideological underpinnings, instrumentalities of operationalization, its regional and international ramifications as well as the foreign policy rhetoric and choices pursued by the state.
Dr Fair begins by describing Pakistan as an insecure state which views India as ‘its eternal foe that not only seeks to dominate Pakistan but to destroy it’. The genesis and the evolution of this strategic culture can be traced to the partition of the Indian subcontinent and the subsequent events that followed. For Pakistan the process of partition was unfair with a ‘moth eaten’ Pakistan created in 1947. Territories like Junagarh, Hyderabad and Kashmir were denied to Pakistan by Indian perfidy and British conspiracy. Constant references are made to the award of seven Muslim majority tehsils in Punjab by Radcliff (insistence of Mountbatten influenced by Nehru), especially of Gurdaspur which allowed India land route to Kashmir thereby facilitating its ‘occupation’.
Dr. Fair argues that Pakistan’s fear of India though couched in terms of security are not so. It is ideological. Pakistani army sees itself as the defender of Pakistan’s ideological frontier i.e. the two nation theory and its Islamic identity vis-à-vis ‘Hindu’ India. It believes that Pakistan is equal to India and seeks parity with the latter despite being much smaller geographically, demographically and economically. The conflict with India is defined in ideolological and civilizational terms making it incumbent upon the Pakistani army to resist what it perceives as Indian hegemony in the region and also India’s global rise. Interestingly, because of this victory and defeat at the hands of Indians is seen differently by the Pakistani army. Even after an outright defeat as in 1971, Pakistani army considered itself victorious because it survived to fight/challenge India another day. Defeat for the Pakistan army would thus be the day it accepts the status quo and Indian supremacy. It is this belief which propels Pakistan to take calculated risks for changing the status quo periodically but regularly. Apart from initiating three regular wars with India and the Kargil misadventure, Pakistan has constantly supported insurgencies in India (Naga, Mizo, Sikh) and waged proxy war in Kashmir. Interestingly while the American’s were training Pakistanis in guerrilla warfare to suppress and defeat insurgencies in the 1950’s, the then Pakistani defense literature was glorifying Vietnamese resistance and also ‘interested in understanding how Pakistan could wage one’. Operation Gibraltar in 1965 and Kargil intrusion in 1999 bear testimony to this thinking.
Pakistan has pursued a policy of strategic depth to limit Indian and Russian (also erstwhile Soviet) influence in Afghanistan. Unlike the generally held view that the concept of strategic depth was enunciated by General Aslam Beg, Dr. Fair posits that this idea of strategic depth in Afghanistan is a colonial legacy which was carried forward by the successor state of Pakistan, even though it did not possess the resources of the Raj. To facilitate covert operations against the Doud government of Afghanistan, training camps were established by Bhutto to train Afghan Mujahedeen as early as 1973. This also explodes another oft repeated myth by the Pakistanis that the Mujahedeen were created by the US to further its own geo-political interests in Afghanistan.
The instruments used by Pakistan to seek strategic parity with India and to resist its rise has been to seek alliances and court international benefactors like United States, China and Saudi Arabia, nurture non-state actors and use terror as an instrument of state policy. Though the USA has been the largest largess provider for the Pakistani state, in Pakistani defense literature USA is portrayed as a perfidious ally. Pakistan constantly harps on the USA failure to overtly support Pakistan despite being an ally in the 1965 and the 1971 war with India, the sanctions imposed under Pressler Amendments (incidentally the passing of this amendment was hailed as a victory for Pakistani diplomacy) and turning its back on Pakistan after Soviet defeat in Afghanistan. No reference however is made of the differing geo-political objectives of the two nations. While Pakistan purportedly became an ally of the US to challenge communism, its goals remained purely India centric. Failure to get active US support in its conflicts with India has been a constant sore point with the Pakistanis. In contrast to the USA, China is projected as an all weather friend. Chinese failures to support Pakistan’s objectives and goals are generally glossed over.
With the overt nuclearization of the subcontinent, Pakistan has pursued a policy of Jihad under the nuclear umbrella against its adversaries. It has supported terrorism against India from its soil and sought to undermine US strategic interests in the region. The possession on nuclear weapons has facilitated nuclear risk taking by Pakistan. By keeping its nuclear doctrine ambiguous and not defining its nuclear threshold it has achieved its twin objectives of deterring India from escalating the conflict as well as drawn international actors like the USA into limiting the conflict. It also rightly believes that being a nuclear power restrains USA from completely abandoning Pakistan.
The question then remains is can the strategic culture of the Pakistani army can be changed? Scholars have argued that with the strengthening of democratic institutions in Pakistan, this narrative would be challenged. Some (Ahmed Rashid, Raphel) have argued that a grand bargain with India through the resolution of the Kashmir dispute (to Pakistan’s satisfaction) may facilitate such a change. Dr Fair appears to take a pessimistic view and does not foresee any change happening in the near or distant future. Dismissing the grand bargain theory she describes Pakistan as a ‘purely greedy state’ which is defined by Charles Glaser as a state ‘fundamentally unsatisfied with the status quo, desiring additional territory even when it is not desired for security.’ Any appeasement of this ‘greedy state’ might aggravate the problem rather than solving it. She further argues that even if Pakistan undergoes a permanent democratic transition it does not obviously follow that ‘civilians will abandon the persistent revisionism with respect to India. This is because of the deep presence of army’s strategic culture, based on the ideology of Islam and two nation theory, within Pakistan’s civil society, political culture and bureaucracies’. A case in point is the Abbotabad attack by USA, which provided the civilians an opportunity to asset some control over the army, instead they chose to rally around the latter. Some scholars argue that the India centric doctrine of the Pakistani army has now changed and it has acknowledged internal threats as the main challenge. While Pakistani army may at times acknowledge internal threats but it successfully ‘externalizes’ those threats to the enemies (India) of Pakistan, who are held responsible for creating and aggravating these threats. This in turn brings the conventional focus back to India for the army and also buttresses its role as the premium institution in the country which can manage these threats.
One interesting and novel fact brought out by Dr. Fair is the changing recruitment pattern of the army. Her research shows that in 1972 the army officers came from only few districts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), but by 2005 practically all districts of Pakistan were producing officers. Her field work suggests that many of these officers do not share the ‘core values’ of the Punjabi dominated strategic culture of the Pakistani army with the same intensity. How this changes the nature of the discourse of this strategic culture in future remains to be seen.
The book provides important policy prescriptions for both India and United States. She argues that USA should stop ‘attempting to transform the Pakistani army of Pakistan for that matter. It is unlikely that the United States can offer Pakistan any incentive that would be so valuable to Pakistan and its security interests that the army would abandon the varied tools it has developed to manage its security competition with India, much less consider a durable rapprochement.’ The realities for India are starker. ‘The Pakistan army will continue to weaken India by any means possible, even though such means are inherently risky. In the army’s eye, any other course will spell true defeat.’ It is time that the Indian policy planners stop being wooly eyed about Pakistan and face facts.
This book is a must read for all policy planners in India and the United States. This would help them shed many of their illusions and accept realities howsoever uncomfortable.

Probably the best book I've read all year

While the conclusions in this book may come across at first glance as biased towards India's position, they are very well supported by the extensive research and analysis Fair has presented in her book. Fair has done a truly remarkable job diving into the partition era political history of the Indian subcontinent and how concepts such as the two-nation theory, strategic depth and such have been foundational in the evolution of the strategic culture of the Pakistan Army. The picture she paints of Pakistan's formation and the considerable obstacles, lack of resources, and challenges the country faced immediately post partition have been eye-opening to me - this is the one thing that most people who've grown up in India will probably never hear of and appreciate. Fair's enumeration of the variety of non-state actors operating in the region and the ideologies and motivations that have led to their creation, rise and fall has truly been educational in every aspect. Her analysis of the wars fought between the two countries, the division of Pakistan into the current Pakistan and Bangladesh (and the role of the Indian army in it) is remarkable. Last but not the least, her analysis of how the US (and India?) should alter its current foreign policy in the subcontinent and a potential way forward makes for some truly excellent reading. I would, undoubtedly, recommend this book and honestly believe significant parts of this book (especially the research) need to be incorporated into the history text books of the countries in the sub-continent.
