Mindaugas Pocius is currently a freelance Dynamics AX technical and functional consultant and trainer at DynamicsLab Limited (www.dynamicslab.com). A must for any professional AX2012 developer

One of my preferred and favorite ways of learning a development platform is by looking at examples and recipes created by others, so this book serves as a great asset for those who wants to be a professional Dynamics AX developer. There are more than 80 examples spanning from small simple nuggets to advanced examples. The examples are nicely explained, so you're not left with just some chunk of code and have to understand what is going on, but rather you'll get information what the code is doing. Many of the examples are a must for any professional developer to master when working with Dynamics AX. There are also some very good examples covering the new development patterns we find in AX2012.

I would highly recommend any AX developer to run through the examples and also AX consultants could benefit from getting to know some of the valuable and powerful patterns these examples show and explain. I gave it 4 out of 5, but not because the content was poor, but I would like the book to have even more recipes and examples.

As Dynamics AX developers, we are working with a niche product and do not have an abundance of technical literature as more generic development technologies enjoy. One can find a lot of answers by googling but having an academic approach to learning I cannot overestimate the amount of knowledge one can pick up from reading a good book.

The “Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 Cookbook” provides an excellent set of real-life scenarios and solutions that can be applied as is or help to come up with creative ways of approaching development tasks we face. The recipes apply to many areas of AX, are very well explained and come with well-written code samples.

I highly recommend this book to those starting their Dynamics AX development career as well as mature developers who will still find new tricks or refresh their memory.

Great Old Bluegrass Songs

I recently stumbled across this book in a school library. While the book is quite old, so are the 88 songs, all of which are classic bluegrass tunes. The melody notes are kept simple, and the chords are given for each song, making it a great book to use for playing in or practicing for jams. Highlights: many Ralph Stanley songs, interesting anecdotes about bluegrass songs, instruments, and musicians. Great to have the words to "Pffftt, You Were Gone," made famous on Hee-Haw.

worst grammar book I know of

Purports to be a high-level EFL grammar book, but it is so replete with errors, it will make for constant headaches for any instructor who uses it. I don't mean typos, typing errors: I mean factual errors about English grammar because the author, Allen Ascher, has apparently only begun recently studying it.

A couple of examples:

1. "We went sight-seeing there." The book teaches that in this sentence, "sight-seeing" is a noun. (p. 161)

2. Ascher teaches that "not" isn't an adverb. (p. 199)

3. Book draws a false distinction between "I tried to learn" and "I tried learning" (p. 323).

4. Book claims that "there" as in "there is a cat" is a subject. (p. 38)

And there are others that got my goat, on pp: 296, 131, 149, and elsewhere.

Even if you're willing to overlook the errors (or use them as discusssion points), the book contains an awful lot of talk talk talk and not enough exercises.

Most annoyingly, the book contains all the corrections, as in "Check your answers on page 57." Needless to say, Ascher's answers will often contradict those of any competent teacher, causing problems for the latter in the classroom. (Right out of the gate for some of these: p. 4 teaches students that "is going to" is a helping verb. Have fun explaining that one: it's a defensible position, but also typical of how this book reconceptualizes things in startling and unconventional ways, something you don't necessarily need when you're teaching.)

Are you a student who'd like to sharpen your editing skills so your essays and papers don't come back with your instructor's circles and underlines over your repeated grammar mistakes? Or maybe you're a writing instructor looking for resources to help your students edit their written work? Preferably readily-typed paragraphs or essays fraught with specific mistakes?
If you say "YES" in either case, then Allen Ascher's "Think about editing: a grammar guide" is THE book for you!
This book is really useful and practical because it's an English grammar guide-cum-practice book. Most grammar books provide "fill in the blanks" or cloze passage-type of exercises where you can find get the answers but somehow, you still make the same grammar mistakes in your writing. This book is different as it helps students look out for mistakes in paragraph or essay form. This way, it provides simulation-type exercises which hone you to apply grammar rules to your writing.
All the practise passages contain either one type of grammar mistake or several so you are gently eased into the editing mode.Soon, you'll get so used to looking for grammar mistakes in paragraph/ essay form, you'll find no trouble editing your own writing!
In a nutshell, it's a great book both as a grammar reference as well as a practice book. Trust me, you'll never agonize over editing your work again.

I think this is an excellent book

I am very interested in grammar and the proper use of words. So many people "murder" the English language these days. This book is easy to read and the lists make understanding easy. I think the book is very helpful when a person has questions about word usage, especially verbs, and punctuation.

This book really works!

I originally purchased this book in 1995 and used it several times for job interviews. I loaned it to several friends over the years, and I can honestly say that until the most recent economic downturn, it had a 100% success rate!

Unfortunately whoever I loaned it to last never returned it, so I had to buy another copy.

The tips are great, action steps make sense and going through the exercises in the book prepare you well for a successful hiring process. Highly recommended!

Tom Jackson books came out in the 1980s and early 1990s - there simply haven't been the type of guides that he has written since then. I was glad to have found them again, and they helped my recent interviews a lot!

Cheaper than US edition

The international edition is as good as the US edition, or way better. Its cheap and totally worth it to buy over the US edition. Book wise its identical, they may not be on the same page but all are in the same order. My buddy on page 20 US edition but mine is one page 44 on international edition, but his page 21 is on my page 45, if im not wrong, you just had to add +22 pages to the US edition to get on the same page as on international edition. Good luck, get this book cheap rather than getting ripped off by those overpriced textbook which is being sold in school.
