About the Author
Markus Rathgeb completed his Ph.D. dissertation, 'Otl Aicher: Design as a Method of Action', for the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication at the University of Reading in England and has published several articles on Aicher's work in both English and German. He is currently a professor of design methods and graphic design at the University of Cooperative Education, Ravensburg, Germany, and works as a design consultant.

Excellent!

This catalogue is a cohesive and "entertaining" look at Aicher's work. The writing is illuminating and the images are excellent. The breadth of work examined here illustrates the history of this artist and designer, his process and the dynamic images he created. Of course, his work for the Munich Olympics are here, but they are only a part of the entire picture. For me, anyway, this book shed light on how brilliant his vast career was and it has provided new art/designs that I admire. For someone who was not too familiar with Aicher's work, this could be a revelation.

Otl Aicher and his collegues has created among the most modern but still timeless graphic design ever. Many of his design programmes are still in use even if they where created 50, 40 or 30 years ago. I think this is due to his method; a palette of few graphic elements, strong grids, well balanced color schemes, combined with an artistic hand and a twinkle in the eye. Novel Idea

The best way to describe this book is to think about a lawyer arguing a case before a court and presenting a novel argument with no primary authority or evidence to support it. While the argument may sound good, it is unlikely a court would disturb established precedent in order to adopt such a novel argument. This is precisely what the author Dan Herman is asking of the reader, to adopt his novel arguments on marketing, while discarding established marketing precedent.

In disposing of what Herman believes to be outdated principles of marketing, he introduces his own "new terms," so that he gets you into his movie, so to speak.

Throughout the book, Herman attempts to draw comparisons of his system to a variety of successfully marketed products and companies, none of which are based on his system. Also, there are no footnotes linking any evidence or studies to support any of his theories. Herman does say, however, that "This isn't a textbook, so I'm not going into precisely what each term means and how we research and analyze each and every topic." In effect, Herman is asking the reader to adopt his theories, while disposing of established marketing principles, which he contends no longer work, a tall order to say the least.

The book is well written and has its moments, yet falls short in establishing any evidence to support this supposedly improved marketing system, over that of the principles being used by MBA clones. Since the book introduces so many new terms, it could benefit from adding a summary at the end of each chapter, tying in those key points and terms.

In short, the book boils down to a series of novel arguments. Whether they work in the dynamic world of marketing is anyone's guess, since the author is defining the scope of that success with a variety of his own new terms and ideas, which have yet to be adopted or proven.

Fresh perspective

So many business books are telling a similar story, but this one's got some new perspectives. I don't agree with everything Herman says, but it's nice to have some different experiences and opinions to consider than just the same old, same old. It's also much cheaper than most textbooks! Worth the money.

Great textbook, esp if you can get the videos

This was one of my favorite textbooks in my MBA program. It is well written and organized, and the case studies are interesting. Our teacher also had videos of (usually) the central person of the case study who was interviewed by one of Kenneth Merchant's classes. It was fascinating to hear what had happened afterwards and to see the central person "in the flesh."

This should be required reading for all managers. A terrific book which covers an important subject, how to create the right control and evaluation system in your organization. The writing is clear and engaging, an easy read. It is a comprehensive coverage, even has a chapter on control systems in not-for-profits. The book also includes numerous detailed cases.

Definitive Guide Like No Other

Finally a New Essential Guide that can truly be called "Essential!" This may be the best essential guide (only the New Essential Chronology competes with it) written. Dan Wallace (with the aid of Able Pena and Pablo Hidalgo) has gone over every nook and cranny of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and if there's a droid to be found, a detail to uncover, a story-element to expose, he's done it!

After the disappointing New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels (which followed the trend of ignoring a lot of early Expanded Universe sources), I thought I was through with the NEG's. The New Essential Chronology changed that and this book has now upped the ante on ALL future Star Wars reference books!

Everything is here. Entire pages are devoted to characters from rare and even out-of-print continuity sources, from old newspaper strips by Russ Manning, to the Droids animated show and spin-off Star Comics series, to Alan Moore's rare stint on Marvel UK's Empire Strikes Weekly (reprinted in Devilworlds) to the requisite but often overlooked pages of Marvel Star Wars (reprinted recently as A Long Time Ago volumes 1-7), L. Neill Smith's brilliant Lando Calrissian trilogy, RPG sources, novels, young readers books, Dark Horse comics; It's all here and much, much more! Not a stone is left unturned from 1977 to 2006, nearly 30 years of continuity has gone into this book that actually succeeds in demonstrating that the much maligned "appliances" of Star Wars are really fascinating creations in their own right, and every bit as intriguing as their human masters.

Wallace handles the text expertly, weaving bits of continuity to form a much stronger and cohesive whole. This is not a guide for techies either, or even just for those who've read every original source out there, but rather it's a book for the average Star Wars reader written with a narrative structure. Far from simply providing the origin and purpose of the droid in question, each entry features fascinating short biographical tales of some of the famous examples that caused either salvation or destruction to the galaxy! Also, there's a history of droids section that details the dawn of their inception to their persecution and abolition at the hands of the Yuuzahn Vong. Also, as an added bonus, the illustrations here are stunningly realized.

This is definitely a guide you don't want to miss and represents the high watermark Star Wars authors can achieve when they combine love of the universe with intelligent, diligent research and a deft hand at fixing the plotholes and connecting the dots. For from these often disparate pieces, some of the great tales emerge. This book is proof of that.

Great content, uninspired art

I was a fan of the old "Essential Guide" series when they were first released. They had great content but I'll be honest, I mainly used them as visual supplements to whatever tabletop RPG I was running at the time.

I picked this one up as a visual companion to the new Edge of the Empire RPG that was recently released (since you can play droids as a player character). Daniel Wallace went out of his way to include every droid you ever saw in the movies, shows, etc. and then some. Unfortunately, Daniel's hard work is marred by the visuals of the book. Everything about the art design here looks amateur-ish at best.

The 3D renderings here remind me of the visual effects on the first season of Babylon 5 (circa 1993). I'm not sure why this was used on a book printed in 2006. Things don't stop there, the borders on the pages also make everything look sterile, 3D rendering ruins this as well.

Finally, I find the typesetting to be jarring. On most pages, there is a block of text in the center of the page, a quote about the droid, that the main text wraps around. The main text is justified around this box and it has a huge whitespace border. This style of text wrapping is quite hard to read and it breaks up the flow of the main text. I found my eyes being pulled from the main text to the quote over and over again. For an example of this check out page 59.

Once you see good art direction, it makes bad art direction stand out all the more. If you want to see better art direction in some Star Wars books check out The New Essential Guide to Alien Species or The Wildlife of Star Wars a Field Guide.

As you can tell, I'm a bit disappointed in this book. I'd skip this book unless you are a hard core Star Wars fans.

Solid entry in the series

For the most part I feel the Star Wars "Essential Guide" series are a good value for the money. Yes, there is a LOT of SW product out there but the entire line is well done, and this new book on droids is no exception. The illustrations are excellently done, and the text is detailed enough to be interesting but brief enough to be enjoyable. Even a casual SW fan should enjoy this book.

Cookin' a slow death

"The white powder looked innocent lying there in the open, but this was the drug of the damned, the curse of the mankind: heroin, what some "smack," others "junk," "snow," "stuff," "poison," "horse." It had different names but the same effect. To all of its users-to all- to all of the dopefiends in Detroit ghetto - it was a slow death. - Donald Goines.

Before reading Dopefiend I never knew the importance of an addict having their `morning do' and unclogged works. I never imagined what it would be like to shoot dope in veins in places such as your neck, in your groin or between your toes or could even envision such sordid actions like sleeping with dogs for example. I never imagined what it would feel like having a monkey so heavy on my back that I routinely dug a bottomless pit of hell, or engaged in such acts that slowly took away my soul leaving only my shell.

Donald takes you through physiological minds from two perspectives, the drug dealer and the user. While the user is digging his exit with a slow death, the dealer believes he's holding the winning hand in the game. Dopefiend is a very bleak description of drug usage that takes place in the 70's in Detroit Michigan. It takes us through the transformation of several addicts and what begins and ends when you use heroin.

I enjoyed this novel from top to bottom; I liked how Donald would dedicate an entire chapter to a particular character giving us enough time to bond with what was happening during their downfall. His style of writing is excellent and very easy to follow. His vivid details made me feel like I was in the drug house helping Smokey find a vein, or running out of the local store with my floor model black and white TV screen. Should you pick up this street lit classic, you won't be disappointed.

I give Dopefiend a solid 5 stars.

This is my favorite Donald Goines book and one of my favorite books of all time.

I read 10 of his books . "Dopefiend" basically takes you threw the life of two dope fiends a man and a woman. one from a poor family and one from a middle class family. it is a great book it would answer any questions that u would have about dopefiends. like : why would some one even consider shooting up ?? or why would some one risk there life?? why cant they quit?? why would they even start?? and many more questions. it is very detailed and grimy. donald goines keeps it all the way real about the life of a dopefiend.

BE DRUG FREE....

This is the third Donald Goines book that I have read and it is by far, the most gritty, graphic and gory one I have read yet. This man's descriptive abilities are so awesome that it makes you sick sometimes, but in a good way. If you are a person that has never really been exposed to drugs and the toll that they take on the user, and the way users live and breathe their next fix, then this is the book for you. At the end of this book, you will no longer have to wonder about junkie/dealer relationships or the effects of drugs, because Goines has given you all you need to know. Great read!

About the Author
Prof Don Kearley received his PhD from the University of East Anglia, UK, worked at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France, became Chair of Radiation Physics at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, and is presently Senior Researcher in the Neutron Scattering Group at the Bragg Institute of ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization). He has a fair experience of most neutron-scattering techniques, particularly inelastic and quasielastic methods. Currently most of his work is in providing modelling support for the neutron scattering activities of scientists at the Bragg institute and elsewhere, which is usually in the form of understanding the underlying mechanism in function. Dr Vanessa Peterson is a Senior Research and Instrument Scientist at ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization). Her expertise includes structure and dynamics in chemistry and their relationship to properties in condensed matter materials including cement, porous coordination framework materials, and hydrogen storage materials. She has also great expertise in analyses techniques like Synchrotron/Laboratory X-Ray and Neutron Powder Diffraction, Rietveld analysis, Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering, Inelastic Neutron Scattering, and Single Crystal X-Ray Diffraction.

Beyond the simplest arrangements

These arrangements are almost all slightly beyond the simplest tune-only arrangements in most books. 23 different songs. Includes chords and lyrics. Nice back page reference of Mandolin Notation symbols. If you want a Christmas collection that's beyond the beginner books (but not terribly advanced), you will like this.

Very Nice Arrangements of Christmas Music for the Mandolin

I bought a few of the Christmas Music for Mandolin books here at amazon. This is the only one that I felt was very helpful. The others mainly provide the melody line and chords, which I can get from a bazillion other Christmas collection books. This one provided some very nice arrangements for the mandolin, using double stops, tremelos, etc. I played one of the arrangements in church this morning and they loved it.
